  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

(NWT) Matthew 16:16-17- 16- "In answer Simon-Peter said "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" 17- "In response Jesus said to him "Happy you are Simon, son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal it to you, but my Father who is in the Heavens did"

(NWT) John 21:15- "When now they had breakfasted, Jesus said to Simon-Peter: "Simon, Son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him "Yes, Lord, you know I have affection for you" He (Jesus) said "feed my lambs"

(KJV) Matthew 16:16-17- 16- "And Simon-Peter answered and said: "Thou art the Christ, Son of the living God"" 17- "And Jesus answered and said unto him: "Blessed art thou Simon Bar-Jo'na for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in Heaven"

(KJV) John 21:15- "So, when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon-Peter, "Simon, son of Jon'as, lovest thou me more than these?" He saith unto him, "Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee." He (Jesus) saith unto him "Feed my lambs"

(ESV) Matthew 16:16-17- 16- "Simon-Peter replied, "You are the Christ, Son of the living God" 17- "And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you Simon Bar-Jonah!, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in Heaven."

(ESV) John 21:15- "When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon-Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him: "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He (Jesus) said "feed my lambs"

(NLT) Matthew 16:16-17- 16- "Simon-Peter answered "You are the Messiah*, Son of the living God" 17- "Jesus replied "You are blessed, Simon, Son of John* (Greek: "Simon Bar-Jonah) because my Father in Heaven has revealed this to you, you did not learn this from any human-being"

(NLT) John 21:15- "After breakfast Jesus asked Simon-Peter, "Simon, son of John, Do you love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord" Peter replied "You know I love you." "Then feed my lambs", Jesus told him."

My Question is Whose "Son" is Simon-Peter, and can someone tell me the meaning of "Simon Bar-Jonah, or Simon Bar-Jo'na as the KJV puts it, also the KJV says in John 21:15 that Simon Peter is the "son of Jon'as". The common consensus seems to indicate that Simon Peter is the Son of John, but not all translations agree, for example the NWT says in one place that Simon-Peter is the "son of Jonah" but in another place the "Son of John" and what does Bar-Jonah mean? Is/does the term Bar-Jonah have anything to do with lineage or parentage, any help any of you can offer would be greatly appreciated, much thanks...:)

Bar means son, Jonah and john are the same name. All the passages are calling Simon the son of the same man...jonah

How are Jonah and John the same name? Do you mean in the Greek they are the same, or what? Could you (please) offer me an explanation of "how" they are the same?
