Some of my favorite Ansel Adams quotes:

1. Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop.
2. Dodging and burning are steps to take care of mistakes God made in establishing tonal relationships.
3. Sometimes I do get to places just when God's ready to have somebody click the shutter.
4. There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.
5. There is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept

what i mean is that to get the clarity of the photo to be so clear when blown up to poster size w/ minimal grain, he HAD to have had at least a medium format, if not a large.... and those are waaaaay out of my budget right now.

i dont have a clue what he DID use.

Most of his famous pictures were taken with an 8x10 old fashioned sheet film camera. (large format) They still don't make anything as good.

Always use a sturdy tripod. You can enlarge a 35mm [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] up to about 40 inches (mixing my metric there!) and it still looks good. Remember, the bigger the shot, the further you'd be viewing from. I don't mind grain - what I can't stand is blurred pictures.

If you have the time, it is really worth browsing through all of his work.

Cool, I wasn't sure this thread would take off like it did. Therefore, I'll throw in my two cents of recollection from those late nights in History of Photography.

Alfred Steiglitz quite impressed me with his cityscapes.
I'd like to own a daguerreotype if I could every find one! (speaking of infinite detail . . . )

Though, if I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be Eugene Atget

Paul Strand is intriguing as well:
