Who is watching the Wheel of Time on Amazon?

A thread to discuss the Wheel of Time series on Amazon. I have been a huge fan of books since 1993. I have them all on audio. Kate Reading and Micheal Cramer do a fantastic job of narration. I listen to the whole series at least once a year. In Fact I'm listening to the first book again now. I have lots of time to listen to audio books while I work.

After I got over being butthurt by the changes they had to make to the story to make it into a tv series, I came to realize that they did a very great job at amazon on this show. The special effects are amazing. I think so far the actors have nailed the characters, especially Nyneave.

If any of you haven't read the books I promise I won't spoil anything. Interested to see what those who have read the books think.

It's on my short list of things to watch. Probably will start later this week after Narcos Mexico season 3 on Netflix.

Wheel of time seems promising, I recall it as one of the books series, fantasy franchises that inspired the Dragon Age computer games besides a Song of Ice and Fire (aka Game of Thrones) and Lord of the Rings.

It is quite different in some ways, but so far i think it's only to enhance the story. I actually really like the newer characterization of the Emond Field 5 especially.

I do too. I like how they make it seem like all of them could be the dragon reborn. At first I was really mad about what they did to Natti and Abel Cauthon but I can see why they did it.

Mat is kind of a rogue but he's also the one who will run into a burning building to save a child. He's my favorite character from any book I've ever read. And I can't wait to see Loyale.

I've never read the series but it's been often recommended to me. Just watched ep1 last night to see what the fuss was about. It was OK; I might watch another, didn't feel that invested in the characters yet, though I liked Rosamund Pike as Moiraine. She kind of out classes the rest of the younger cast who... seemed to be dressed in fairly modern sweaters for some reason?

Couple of good (and one VERY good **OOPS!**) drama moments and battle/spell scenes, great SE... but I kinda start getting turned off as we hit the 4th, 5th, 6th... Xth different way to spell kill an Orc or Trog or Drog or whatever the bads were. Not sure if that was being faithful to the books or just added and exaggerated for TV viewership on the first episode.

Plotwise, yes I liked this - I didn't consider it until late in the episode and then was like "hmm well that makes it more interesting"

It's probably better if you haven't. I highly recommend them after you watch the show. There's a lot of back story of course that they can't show. In reading the series I fell in love with the characters. All of them. I feel like they are real people and they're still out there somewhere. It's worth reading the whole series for no other reason than the last two books and especially the last book. I cried often listening to the final book and I don't cry usually. But I've come to know and love the characters so much. I just had to tell myself to forget the books and just enjoy the spectacle of the show. After all I've been waiting almost 30 years for this. So far, I'm not disappointed. The episodes get better. Just watched the fourth one and I can't wait till this weekend because I think Loyale will be in the next episode.

The bad guys are Trollocs. They are a chimera of men and animals. I think they did a good job on them. The one who leads them is a Myrddraal or fade or half man.

I agree. Nyneave is just like she is in the book only more badA$%. Moiraine too. I was picking it apart until her battle scene and then I was blown away. Did you catch the easter egg at the end of the first episode?

No, but that was a pretty cool scene with Egwene. I'm trying very hard not to spoil anything for those who haven't read the books and haven't watched it yet. My wife is always chastising me for doing that.

Well, I guess it wouldn't really be giving anything away. It was at the end when they were riding out of the village. They recreated the inside cover mural from the original printing. The only thing missing was the full moon.

As I noted in another thread:

My main problem is the writing is just blah. Its like they think contemporary YA-speak is necessary to hook the all important young people audience. I just find it detracts from the other-world mystery thats crucial to the fantasy genre. It draws us back into our here and now instead.

Also, they bring in the peril before I've had a chance to even get invested in the world. So I really dont care that trollox (or whatever they are) are tearing the place apart. Readers dont have this problem approaching the show, as they come pre-invested.

There's only the most minimal respect for setup and pacing and inviting the audience in. (Old person rant over.)

I did notice that about the modern speech and I do think it detracts from it, but maybe they needed it for the younger audience like you say. On The plus side though, I like the diversity of actors. That's how it was since the breaking of the world scattered people around and then there is all the different cultures and their ways in each little country or kingdom. I can't wait to see the Aiel. They better not mess them up!

I'm wondering what they are going to do if this first season is a hit because the series is 14 books and the actors will start to age. The whole thing takes about 2 years in the book so they'll have to either dramatically cut things short or they will have to film all the episodes in the next couple of years. Going to be interesting to see what they do.

The whole thing about time being a wheel and the pattern forcing certain things to happen seems to indicate that man has no free will, that the same things keep happening over and over again. At one point no one knows that Shaitan exists and then Shaitan gets free again and the world gets destroyed and then the dragon is reborn and fixes everything and eventually, things swing back to the condition where no one knows about Shaitan again. They go from practically a utopian society with high technology back to the Stone Age again and again. But is it really a book about determinism?

I think that even though time is not a circle, our world has experienced this cycle. We had the flourishing of the Greeks and then the dark ages and then the renaissance and the age of reason and now we are descending into the dark ages again.

I wish they would go into that more in the show, along with the accompanying world view. It sounds interesting and important. Youre probably steeped in it already from the books.

I've read the books (don't think I finished them all) so I'm interested but don't have Amazon. Hopefully it won't take too long to become available on a service that I do have. I already subscribe too many services so I'm not getting Amazon even though it's tempting.
