People want to form an image of God in their minds that is warm and fuzzy.
Such an image, however, will never correspond with the reality of this world in which we find ourselves. Any God that could be the Creator of a world such as ours, both magnificent and awesome in its dimensions, will never conform to their image of a teddy bear god that they imagine they might want to worship.
So who is Jesus? Jesus is the Son of a God of such a nature that He could actually ask his Son to die a horrible and awful death on a cross. Jesus is a man of such a character that not only could He love a God such as this, but He could call Him Abba, His Father, even His daddy if you will.
This is indeed a terrible vision of life, but to the extent that it conforms to our reality as we know it, it is a revelation of a God such as God must be, given the type of world we are born into.
Such is the nature of a God that has given us the ability to choose, and to therefore be engaged in morality. Because the consequences of our choices matter and are of a grave importance, we too are therefore important.
Because God has given us the gift of eternal life, and allowed us to eat of the fruit of Tree of Life, Who is Jesus, not only are our choices of consequence in this temporal world, but are of an even greater consequence in the eternal world as well.
None of us know whose names have been entered into the Book of Life. The revelation for Christians, though, is that all will be judged according to their works, and all will acknowledge the perfect justice in which this judgement will be performed.
The essence of this message then, is not live our lives in a miserly fashion, assuming God to be a harsh and cruel master. In fact, from the Bible, it is clear the converse is true, and that God only wants us to use the gifts we have been given in the best manner we possibly can. Eat, drink, and be merry, enjoy life, live life to its fullest, and graciously appreciate all that has been given. We have been given this freedom, absolutely.
This is not a harsh message at all.
In the end, the judgement that Christ pronounces on us will be one and the same as the judgement we would pronounce on ourselves. This is implied by the revelation that we all will acknowledge God perfect justice on our day of Judgement.
The bottom line is found in the Lord's Prayer. As we forgive, so will we be forgiven. The yardstick we judge others with will be the yardstick with which we will be judged. Therefore judge not, lest ye be judged. This statement is infinitely more true when it comes to pronouncing a judgment on our own Creator.
