  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Who is attempting to write an epic novel?

I am working on bringing about the production of a movie about the biblical flood. It is not set in the future, it does not involve time travel or transport. It simply begins about 100 years before the Flood when Noah has two sons, Japeth and Shem, and then takes the story to a conclusion after the flood as the family is making its way down from Aarat to find a place for a new home. It attempts to tell the story from a YEC perspective, with all the details of the world-wide catastrophe of the Flood. We hope it will be the "Mother of All Disasters Movies."

As a preliminary step I am working on telling the story as a graphic novel, and with respect to size, it may be several volumes. Because of the need to be very descriptive of this strange pre-flood world, its flora and fauna, its society and architecture, very many words are required.

I need an artist. And all suggestions and input would be appreciated.

I know of course that at this forum I will find myself besieged with numerous comments and attacks against the view that the flood is literal. But I hope that there will some good input and perhaps even connections with people who can help with our Flood Film Website, or Art work for the novel.

I don't know if there is an umbrella icon, to suggest that I will need protection from the coming bombardment, but it does seem the site is dominated by those who reject YEC. But YEC is the premise of the film as we intend to make it, with a universal flood.

I think I'm going to write a 3-5 book science fiction "epic" when I complete the novel I'm working on now. I actually came up with the story about five years ago, continually developed it for about three years, then took a break to write the one I'm currently working on. But my original plan for it did not involve science fiction, so I don't know how it will turn out. It's also a Christian, so I'm not sure how I will work that out. It's still up in the air, but we'll see.

I have tried and failed many times. I can't seem to get past the first chapter if I even get that far. I seem to get tired of what I write rather quickly, but I enjoy writing very much. As of now, I am trying to feel out a novel, but trying to create your own world is very difficult.

I have an outline and basic story idea for a 6 novel fantasy series(among other novel ideas). But it is behind in my que with a children's book and sort of biblical based self help type book in front of it. The idea for the series came first. But the other stuff is more important and I have spent alot of time on the self help book. Both research and bits of writing have progressed ok. The children's book came about by accident, well my accident. I had not intended to write it, but the story idea came in so strong that I had to do it.

i've written a novel. a few in fact. each one is getting better but my favorite by far is the the one wrote for NaNoWriMo. i don't really have the patience for any epic novel writing. i couldn't think of an original idea for that other than the standard "take over the world" idea. i think i might turn to historical fiction writing. i've always wanted to but never took the time to research any facts.

oh, btw, NaNoWriMo is excellent if you want to write a novel (or series of novels) and can never find the inspiration to do it. 50,000 words in 30 days makes it a competition that's quite amusing at times.

Just because your post raised a pet peeve of mine -- it shouldn't cost you anything to get your book published. Your agent should work for a share of your profits, and a publisher should be paying you.

Good advice I got from one in the know: "The only place a writer should ever sign a check is on the back."

(Unless you're just dying for the hassle of self-publishing. Some people are good enough at the business and marketing end that they can be successful that way, but most writers hate that part of the biz.)

I'm writing an epic novel. Well actually its a series that i've been working on since sixth grade. I'm in ninth grade now, shows how far I've gotten! Its a sci-fi/fantasy taking place about 400 years from now. the story takes a two year peroid and the focus shifts from one character to another who are across their planet. The characters seemed to develope their own personalities because I look back at my origonal storyline and see that they are nothing like what I had imagined them to be.

I am supposed to be hard at work writing the first of four science fiction books for young adults. If would be nice if I was like some other writers, who can rattle out lovely dialogue and paragraps so easily. Alas I have to work very hard to get the words up to a publishable standard.

Each book is to be around the 55,000-60,000 word mark, and I only write about 1,000 words a week. I would like to have a writer buddy, who would keep check that I do write those 1,000 words a week. Ho Humm..

Happy scribbling, Jenafer

I remember when I first started writing my book about 6 years ago.. I wrote about 60 pages and then stopped... and threw it away..and then i wrote about 170 pages... and then stopped and threw it away... and then i wrote about 200 pages and i still wasnt happy with it and i threw it away.. Though I have noticed that now the plot and characters are totally different from what I had when I had first tried to write.. The last time I tried to write it was really really good but I made myself throw it out because I was writing it back when I had serious issues with demons. I havent had any ideas of what I wanted to write this time.. I am hoping I can get some soon because I've really been wanting to write..

Well... First... My book was about a demon that was trying to rise and gain power to control the world and whatnot... That was the one i threw away four months ago.. Now I am thinking about just a demon influenced king to be the bad guy... I dont know how else to write it.. You know... and you got to have the main hero to save everyone....

I'm trying to get rid of the classical chosen-hero-saves-the-world-from-absolute-evil pattern myself. It may be archetypical, hearkening back to the roots of myth that lie deep within the foundations of our shared cultural heritage, but still, it has become such an annoying cliché in fantasy literature that I want to contribute some refreshing CHANGE to the genre.
My villains are the celebrated heroes of their people, shining knights in armor whose deeds are put into song. They aren't evil - no more so than any ordinary human - but they are at odds with my protagonist(s). My heroine is an outsider, member of a shunned and reviled minority. The most important holiday of the realm she lives in celebrates an ancient battle in which her people were killed by the thousands at the hands of the valiant knights. People burn effigies of her ancestors on bonfires every spring, linking their victory over the Banshees to the banishment of winter.

I don't know yet what to do with my heroine. I want her to retain a certain sense of ambiguity, but still need a plot that propels her forwards rather than putting her in a static position.
For starters, she's a "half-blood", and her father chose to keep her ignorant of her heritage as well as her mother's grisly fate (see my earlier post, somewhere at the beginning of this thread). But now that she has reached young adulthood, she cannot be kept in the dark much longer.
