Who is attempting to write an epic novel?

Sounds intersting, I feel bad for your Main gal. My main characters lived their lives completly peaceful, then they are thrusted into a conflict they cant understand and are being used by those in power as puppets in the great scheme of things. All they want to do is help people, find there friends, and go home. But its their peaceful nature that causes the other characters to look at themselves and see things they'd rather not see. This cuases problems.

Not an epic, no. I like writing children's (young adult)fantasy. It's shorter for one thing. Once I have a solid idea I can push through to the end & finish a book but I hate editing (re-writes are fine) so I have a pile sitting in a box doing nothing & going nowhere. I just write what I see happening in my head so the characters take control of the plot fairly quickly.

I'm writing a novel-ish thing. Not quite sure where it's going, yet. But I've been spending quite a bit of time on the setting and, though it's not a "world", more of a segment of a world.

It mainly rotates around three countries: Manea, Kepra, and Varda. I had a lot of fun making the map! I could just say: Well, Kepra's going to be impoverished, in a civil war....AND have a desert in the middle of it.

Later I edited out most of the desert.

But anyway, so far I've got 7 kind of short chapters that occupy 23 pages, which I need to flesh out. Like the time I skipped 3 months in one blow.... I need to get out of that habit.

Well...you could have the opposite problem like I do...I can write ten chapters on ONE day in the story!!! And we're talking 35,000 words here!!!

That's a lot of words....

But twice I skipped over time. I was just to excited to get my characters to the capitol that I skipped 4 weeks and then 4 months. My friend told me that was way too much time, and I agreed. I figure maybe 20 or 30 pages to fill it in....

Before I'm going to let myself go into the future, I'm going to figure out the past.

Godssong, you have me intrigued. I've been called lots of things at times but I've never yet been told I'm like someone's dad! So put me out of my misery; how'm I like your dad?

Sorry...I guess I was a bit vague, huh? I just meant...seeing your various posts on writing on this thread as well as several others, you sound like you write similarly (in style, if not in "breed") as my dad...and the way you described how you go about writing DEFINITELY sounds like the way my dad does...

(Sorry, it just amuses me because my dad's and my styles are SO different in so many ways... )

Thankyou. I'm used to being considered a little odd & don't mind but vagueness drives me crazy fairly quickly & I'm insatiably curious by nature. 35,000 is a novel for me but then I like to 'cut to the chase' fairly quickly.

I've been called vague lots of times. It's usually after I call someone's hair "funky" or their writing "gritty". It all makes sense to me!

It's one of those multipurpose words that I always keep on hand (just in speech....). I think I meant it looked....

I take it your writing is not vague but is gritty? Is it also 'funky', whatever that is?

Not really. I just talk (or type) in vague terms. I'm sometimes too exact when it comes to my work. Sometimes I get a tad obsessed over making a point to the reader so I have to cut huge chunks out.

I also use commas way more than I should.
