I agree, Anthony. We have come to the point where everything is how does such-and-such church follow God through such-and-such style of worship. Instead it needs to be how do I show God's love in my everyday encounters with other people. Religion is man-made with motions and rituals which may or may not be what God truly wants. Christianity is God-made. He sent His Son to die for our sins so we may have a PERSONAL relationship with Him. Sometimes that relationship is inhibited by the religion with which one associates because that religion focuses on why everyone else is wrong or on specific rituals. Instead, IMO, what needs to be focused on is how to live a Christ-filled life and show God's love through our own actions. Sometimes titles just get in the way because we find a way to stereotype and become prejudiced against particular ones.

As Christians we would rather stay in the classroom and discuss who, what, where, when and how than to actually have to apply what we know to be true and put it into practice. We have become a society of Professional Christian Students and Intellectuals who have become trapped by the teachings of man rather than the Love of God.

I'm curious... would philosophical/theological pursuits fall outside of the "loving God with your mind" category?

I would say it is about balance, when the drive to acquire facts and figures becomes one's primary focus, then like a car with unbalanced tires, it will be difficult to get to distination.

So...what's the proper balance? 30lbs. of worship psi, 30lbs of prayer psi, 30lbs. of reading the scriptures psi, 30lbs of service psi, 30lbs of reading theology psi?....doh!...that's one too many tires...I guess one will have to be a spare. Just kidding, settle down. I read theology all of the time, but that doesn't hurt my Bible study, my worship, or my prayer.
We have to read what learned men have said, or else we might stumble into false interpretations. It's good to learn the mistakes and successes of the past so that we won't repeat the mistakes.
And on the subject of different types of denominations and worship...I think it would be alot easier if we would just use the regulative principle and drop the excess baggage. If it's not in the scriptures, don't use it. Oddly, most people don't want to sing psalms or include fervant prayer into their worship services.

Grace to you.

How long does it take for a Christian to understand the basics of salvation and the Gospel? While one can spend a lifetime working on becoming Christ Like. Harping on doctrine isn't value added.
