  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am terrible at lying in most cases (except to my parents, hehe). There is always a split second where I hesitate, and that says it all. Sometimes I think lying is the appropriate response. There are some things people don't need or want to hear and know, and I don't think it is always best to know the truth (though I personally prefer to be told). Lying to spare someone pain can be a good thing or not, depending on the situation and person.

I blame my parents and have told them many times. They made me toooo honest! I used to get in trouble for asking questions, all the time. People don't want to hear certain things.

I don't usually lie, I just smile which sometimes a lie would have had a better result.

Some people believe that all lies are wrong, I don't. I am more than happy to tell a lie if it is going to spare a person pain. If someone asks me if I like their dress/hairdo, for instance, I am not going to say it is terrible! I often tell my Mum (81) things she wants to hear rather than what is strictly true, this makes her happy and is not doing any harm. I feel no guilt about this at all.

I am against lying when it hurts the person to whom the lie is directed.

Sorry but a lie is a lie, telling the truth always is best.

My parents are the only ones I am consistently dishonest to. It makes me quite sad, but they are the type who have "expectations" and will never be happy or will be very angry with some of the choices I make. I figure, if the truth will do much more harm than good, sometimes it is best to just go with a white lie or omit a truth. Of course, that is probably me just rationalizing my bad behavior....

Oh man, boy did I miss the boat. I guess I still tell them just too much. Never met their expectations, I think I've gone beyond them. They just don't appreciate it. I used to tell them what was going on, but I eventually stopped. I can't keep track, so I either tell them, or not tell them. Never tell them something misleading.. except once...

They kept bugging me to quite smoking, so I told them one day "I don't smoke any more". Didn't see them for a while since they're out of state. When they saw I was still smoking, they got it... and I told them, well, I ain't smoking any less, either.

'White' lie? are you implying that becuase you are white your lies are less 'bad' than us non-whites? That if an african american lies it's a 'black' lie and somehow worse? How very ignorant and racist of you.

:) Sorry, I couldn't help but comment on any little racial undertones, after reading a thread earlier about the so called racial undertones of movies like king kong :) Please, feel free to continue with your arguements now

Put it this way, if you tell a white lie its because the heart wins over the intellect - your mind knows you are deceiving them because your heart does not want to hurt them. (assuming that you have good intentions)

Its ok to put your heart first before your intellect.

For me and me only, my opinion on this subject is this: I tell it straight or not at all. I have always had a "policy" if you dont want to hear the answer dont ask me the question. Now that dont mean theres been times I wont answer (it is my option) or advise that they wont like my answer but I do say it straight. But this is just my opinion only.

I've always believed in telling the truth, regardless of the outcome. It sucks somtimes, but it's one of the only ways to maintain your integrity.
Couldn't keep track of lies, with the truth it's easy.

I try to be truthful exclusively, but there have to be exceptions.

I was visiting an old school buddy of mine who just had a baby girl. His and his wife's first. They were playing with her on the floor and were obviously enthralled. Then his wife asked me the question I was fearing: "Isn't she the cutest thing (or something like that.)" Honestly, this was one of the ugliest kids I've ever seen in my life. Some babies are cute, but this kid had beady little eyes, a bulbous nose, and this gaping mouth that reminded me of a bass out of water.

So I just said something like "sure" or "uh-huh."

That was 15+ years ago, and I still remember it. Mainly because that baby was so astoundingly homely. And it really did make me a little uncomfortable to lie like that.

I think lying in general is wrong, but we don't live in General, we live in the real world. :D White lies sometimes are more tactful and kind than telling the truth.

For instance, say you're late for an appointment because your spouse/roommate/parent/friend suddenly just was in a bad mood and wanted to start a fight, just as you are leaving the door. Would it better to say, "Sorry I'm late, my spouse was being annoying" or "Sorry I'm late, I lost track of time".

Well, in the "Ten Commandments" it says, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

I think that means something more along the lines of malicious slander or perjury, as opposed to a so called, "white" lie.

That's quite true: Telling a lie to get someone else in trouble, or to benifit yourself, really is wrong. Take the good old shopping-with-a-friend dilemna: Your friend asks how an outfit looks, and it looks terrible-wrong colour, wrong size, wrong fit, wrong everything, but your friend loves it. What do you do? Say "You outfit looks like a red garbage back on you" or "Hmm, perhaps an A-line version would work better, in a slightly darker red"?

I try to stay honest always. White lies bother me, especially when my mom does it. It isn't harmful when she does it, but she does it constantly like she is trying to spare me from the truth. I can't stand that, I'd always rather have the truth.
Well, say you're on the way out the door for an appointment, and your parent is in a bad mood and starts harping on you, not letting you leave until they've vented it all. Once you get to your appointment, would you rather say "Sorry I'm late, my parent was being annoying" or "Sorry I'm late, I lost track of time".

I see nothing wrong with white lies. Most of the time, when I tell a white lie, it's because I know my own honest reaction is wrong, anyway. For example, if someone gets me a Christmas present that I really can't stand, and they ask me if I like it, I'll say I do. The fact is, I should like their present. It was a nice thought to get it for me, and just because it's a sweater that's not my style doesn't matter, and me thinking it does is just me putting too much value on external appearances.
I think that in this case, what you are saying is quite true. If someone knits you a neon green scarf, they put some effort into it and really worked hard on it. To say "Ewww" would just be rude. But it still is a good scarf, so why not wear it in the car, or while going for a walk? It still is a functional scarf...there's no reason to hate it.

On the other hand, if what someone buys you a Rudolf sweater a size too big or too small, it might be better to be honest and ask where they bought it so you can exchange it for the right size, and wear it around the house during the holiday:)

The Seeker said:
Lying isn't always wrong, but it is better to know the truth, more often than not, IMO. If you don't know what's really going on, how can you fix your problems?
Very true! If you're planning a big family Christmas or other holiday, and you end up not getting that bonus you thought you'd get or your paycheque has an unexpected deduction on it, it would be better to say to your family "It looks like we're going to have to value the fun and time together, and work on getting smaller, more meaningful gifts" than going into debt and getting into big trouble, so that the whole family can know what is going on and scale back (with exception, of course, of the little kids, who shouldn't have to hear "Santa is skipping our house this year" but instead "Santa is getting gifts you really like rather than tons of stuff that just get boring after a day or two")

Lying to be tactful or kind is fine in small doses when done carefully. Lying to get yourself out of trouble, to hurt someone, or when there may be any negative effect at all in the future is just destructive.
