Hi Greenriser,
I imagine the circumstances surrounding the mistake would affect how you move on from it, but I know for a fact, because the Bible affirms it, that God is merciful and forgiving. There is no mistake or lie or sin that he has not already paid for through the death of his son Jesus.
When we make a mistake because of fear or persecution, we need to confess that to God. He already knows about it of course, but he wants us to admit that we made the mistake.
By confessing our sins, we acknowledge that we are powerless to deal with our own sin, and that we must rely totally on God.
And then we are free to move on. The most remarkable thing about forgiveness from God is that from that moment, we are free. God no longer sees us as guilty, but as forgiven.
As to whether God punishes sick pagans, well I don't think whether they are sick or not has anything to do with it. God embraces all who come to him in faith through the saving work of Jesus. Any pagan can share in that promise by confessing Jesus as lord. No one is beyond salvation, no matter what they have done.
Remember Peter, who denied Christ three times, but was forgiven readilly by Jesus.
In good faith,
james
