Charleton Heston is the man! The original by far is the best! I watched about an hour of the new one and turned it off. It was horrible IMO.

Yes Oblivious it was. For one thing the acters was'nt so good. I didn't like the way Moses was holding and shaking his head when God spoke to hem, he looked a little crazy. The directing was just ... not good.
I should of just read the books of Moses.:(
The old ones is soo much better.

The violence of the Old Testament is something hard to explain, to kids and adults. I appreciated Mose's lament after defeating the Amalekites. If he only knew what was in store for Israel's future, that 3200 years later they'd still be fighting for possession of the land.

Jury is still out with me. I only saw the last hour of it as I had choir practice on Tuesday and a family dinner on Monday. From what I saw, I wasn't too thrilled about the new version. I'm going to have to get a real objective look.

BTW, the series was on ABC. CBS would have done a "classier" job of it if they had chosen to do it.

I tend to agree with you and a few others. I didn't like some stuff about this one. They pulled in a lot of non-biblical stuff, then changed other things, I really hated how Moses looked like he was in pain everytime God spoke to him, I didn't like them focusing more on how angry they were. True it happened but they seemed to compress certain time spans just to fit that in. So I'd have to say the Heston version was better. Though I didn't like the special effects of them crossing the Red Sea in this version.

Anyone who watches LOST notice that the actor who plays Sayid also plays Moses' brother in this new version?

The new version is actually more accurate Biblically...but I feel it misses the point.

The thing with the Law is that the Jews followed it too literally. They missed the spirit of the Law, and that is what was most important.

As such, I gotta go with the Classic version as well. It may not be as Biblically accurate in terms of the story, but in terms of morality, it is more Biblically accurate than the New version.

Looks like the old version with Heston is winning hands down. I was able to watch another great one Jesus of Nazerath on Easter. It was a whopping 8 hours long but I so enjoyed it. There was moments in that one that could rival The Passion of the Christ. But I loved Passion.

Thanks to all of you for taking my poll  I had fun !!

I think I liked the Heston one the best (probably because I'm used to watching it every year). The Red Sea crossing in the new one was cool. Of course the Bible itself has a lot of interesting facts that the movies leave out or mention in passing. For instance, the Bible says that Moses burned the golden calf, ground it into powder, put it in the water, and forced the Israelites to drink it. I think this is a great example of the book being better than the movie!

I'll bet no one is aware there was a silent 1923 version. I kind of liked that one. I had the privilege of taping that off AMC several years back when it had their middle-of-the-night "Silent Sunrise" special.

Yes.... I'm the "odd duck" here!

Wanna Witness, I know of that version :)

My wife and I bought the Charlton Heston DVD, which has the silent version included.
Cecil B. DeMille directed both versions

An Easter or 2 ago I missed the chance to record a bunch of silent
films about the life of Christ that AMC was showing... And now that TV Guide has dispensed of the beloved digest format with local listings in a convenient form, I'm missing a lot more of what's on... even with online listings, I'll always like flipping through paper listings.

CBS just aired the new movie The Ten Commandments. I am wondering who saw it and do you favor the old classic with Charlston Heston or the new one? In the poll I am also throwing in The Prince of Egypt for variety.

I favored the classic version.
I wanted to say the newer version was better.... however, the film maker didn't seem to grasp how to make an epic movie in any way. Pacing was awful, scenes that should have been lengthened for dramatic aeffect (such as the plagues and the crossing of the sea) were rushed through, and there was very little if any dramatic weight to the acting or writing to enable anyone to get anything out of this film. We would've been better served by Mel Gibson directing a new theatrical version instead!
