Since we have some new members, I just wanted to re-ask this question.

My patron is St. Photini.

Illuminated by the Holy Spirit, All-Glorious One, from Christ the Saviour you drank the water of salvation. With open hand you give it to those who thirst. Great-Martyr Photini, Equal-to-the-Apostles, pray to Christ for the salvation of our souls.

I am named after St. Xenia of St. Petersburg. She was a Fool-for-Christ. She lived in St. Petersburg in the 1700's, married to a kind of a worldly officer, who died without repenting of his sins. Xenia began wearing his uniform jacket and wandering around St. Petersburg, homeless, for decades. She would help people and make prophesies. She was most famous for carrying bricks at night to help build a church. The workers would come in the morning and find that a lot of the grunt work had been done, thanks to Xenia. Before she died, the Lord granted her the blessing of letting her know that her husband was in heaven. She was "Blessed" Xenia until rather recently, but now she's St. Xenia. Her icon shows an elderly, worn-out woman, usually standing in front of the church she helped build.

Saint Matrona of Chios:

http://home.it.net.au/~jgrapsas/pages/St_Matrona.htm

This page is slightly inaccurate; this St. Matrona is celebrated on the date of her repose, October 20th, and the finding of her relics is on July 15th. A different St. Matrona is celebrated on March 27th.

Also, I thought it was interesting that St. Matrona fell asleep on the day that St. Artemius the Great Martyr is celebrated, the patron saint of her monastery's church.

Saint John the Baptist AKA Saint John the Forerunner (Prodromos in Greek).

I just learned yesterday at one of our favorite monasteries that I actually celebrate every Tuesday. Wednesday is the day Jesus was betrayed (hence the fast), Friday the day Jesus was crucified (hence the fast), Thursday is Saint Nikolas and the Holy Apostles and Monday is the Angels (hence why monastics fast on Monday as they are taking the place of the angels who fell along with Satan).

I get to celebrate a lot :D.

The Beheading of St. John the Forerunner is on my birthday. Even though my patron is St. Matrona, I still like to ask for St. John's intercessions as well. Sure, it's because of him that I can only eat my birthday cake after dark, but I don't mind too much. :)

:D Sure, blame him for the fast! :D

St. John the Forerunner is our greatest saint along with the Theotokos, that is why those two saints are depicted on the right and left sides of Christ.

My two patrons are the Theotokos and St. Elizabeth, the mother of St. John the Baptist. At Holy Baptism, I received the name Elizabeth. Then at my Holy Chrismation, I received the name of Maria. So I am addressed as "Elizabeth-Maria" by the Orthodox Church.

This is confusing to me--when I'm taking communion, why does my priest sometimes call me by my baptismal name, and sometimes call me by "Courtney-Matrona"? (Courtney's my birth name.) I've even had one priest just call me Courtney before taking communion since I think he forgot who my patron is for a second.

Maybe it just depends on what name the priest remembers fastest. :)

Speaking of names, I wonder, has anyone here taken their baptismal name as their legal name? If I ever get married, since I'm already going to change my last name, I'm thinking about switching my middle name while I'm at it since I'm not particularly attached to either my middle name or last name.

Yes, I did. Elizabeth was my middle name. Now it's my first name.

A priest told me that it's always best to announce your name just before receiving Holy Communion, Holy Confession, or the Holy Unction. Sometimes I forget and the priest will say "Your name?" With my menopausal moments, I forget sometimes, but the priests aren't getting any younger either. We must pray for that more young men will respond to the call from God to serve Him in the Holy Diaconate and Holy Priesthood.

I am seriously considering changing my legal name to Photini. As of now, this is how everyone at church knows me. But the people at work still use my secular name. I answer to either...but prefer Photini. (My secular name is Heather.)

St Philip of the Seven Deacons.

For those of you who do not know the story of my reconciliation, the following passage was instrumental. Through it the Holy Spirit led me to surrender my pride. I had believed that I could understand God and His revelation on my own. By the Grace of God, I now understand that He provided the Church to guide us.

Act 8:26-31 (RSVA)
But an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is a desert road. And he rose and went. And behold, an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a minister of the Can'dace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of all her treasure, had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, "Go up and join this chariot."
So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?" And he said, "How can I, unless some one guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with
him.

Named for the Holy Prophet Joel who prophesied the descent of the Holy Spirit.

1019AJoel.jpg

Since thou hadst seen the glory of God in the spirit, thou truly didst foreknow His divine dispensation; for as thou didst say, God's Spirit is poured forth upon all flesh that believeth in Him Who appeared to the earthborn in a servant's form and made thee wondrous for ever, O Joel, thou seer of God.
