  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'd just love to use a pro version of photoshop, but currently, my money (and time) is spent improving my photography and not my post-processing. I truly pray I will never spend more time in front of a computer than out taking pictures in my photography!

I do use Photoshop Elements 2, the crippled version along with a book called "The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 2" which manages to recreate most of the commonly used tools in Photoshop (pro) using macros and tapping into halfway disabled functions. It's a good system and it meets my needs as far as I would much rather teach myself to TAKE a great photograph than to process one after a halfway decent shot.

PS7 (upgrading to PS CS this spring), Paint Shop Pro, and a ton of PS filters and add ons. I have NIK tools slated for purchase, but I'm waiting for exta work to come in that's above and beyond my normal monthly profit before I spring for those.

For RAW file processing, I use Nikon Capture 5.1. Excellent program, does a wonderful job.

Wow, I'm really surprised to not see The GIMP on this list! It's open source, so free, and runs on every platform (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.). Comparable to Photoshop in ability, but takes a little time to become proficient. I think version 2.2 may be out now. I know Sourceforge.net has a link to the installer as well as tons of other open source applications, several for windows.

I also use Photoshop Albums for simple picture editing; gotta love free and not illegal!

Uh oh, I totally forgot to mention GIMP!!!! And I call myself a Linux fan!!!!!!

Yessss, Gimp is AWESOME! I haven't used it on Windows, but when I have on Linux, Gimp is free and would cost a small fortune if they put a price tag on it!!

Paintshop Pro is an absolutely fine piece of software, though I use Photoshop myself I'll be the first to admit that PSP gives PS a run for its money (and at a fraction of the price) in almost all areas when it comes to image manipulation.

One piece of software I consider absolutely VITAL for digital images, and use it on every single photograph I take is NeatImage, all digital cameras produce images with a certain amount of noise in them, NeatImage removes this noise to an absolutely remarkable degree, with extremely minimal loss of resolution.

It comes in several 'flavours' the commercial version, which integrates with Photoshop as a plug-in, is very reasonably priced.

The demo version is completely free of charge, and don't be misled by the term demo, this is a completely fully functional piece of software, it's a standalone program, so doesn't integrate with Photoshop, and processing is done seperately, but other than that there's no difference in terms of what the program will do to clean up your images.

You can download the software from NeatImage's website, I haven't enough posts yet to add a link, but you can search for NeatImage on Google to find the site.

Once you've used it you'll wonder how you ever managed without it!
