By now, most people have heard that Pope Benedict suggested that we learn the mcommon Catholic prayers in Latin, specifically the ones that are printed in the Compendium of the Catechism that was just released.

Does anyone know exactly which prayers these are? I know that the Signum Crucis, Doxologia Minor, Ave Maria, and the Veni, Sancte Spiritus were listed in the press release.

Additionally, I would assume that the Pater Noster/Oratio Dominica, the Symbolum Apostolorum, Symbolum Nicaenum, Confiteor, the Sanctus, as well as the Agnus Dei would be included.

Does anyone know exactly which prayers are listed? If there is anyone from Italy who has seen the Compendium, perhaps you could fill us in?

Thanx!

I've been learning the Angelus in Latin. Right now, I'm trying to memorize the Te Deum Laudamus.

So far I can only do this by memory...

Te Deum Laudamus, Te Deum confitemur;
Te aeternum Patris omnis terra veneratur.

Does anyone know of a good music CD with good old Catholic classics like this?

Tibi omnes Angeli, tibi Caeli et universae Potestates.

Saying it at Matins every day helps. :)

I don't know of any specific CDs, although there's lots of Gregorian chant CDs out there. A good way to memorise the prayers is to say them every day - I know all sorts of wonderful prayers from the Office just from praying it, rather than sitting down to specifically memorise them.

Paul, that is exactly what I do - repetition. Eventually I get the added benefit of being able to say it whenever I just want to sing praise in Latin. :) I just don't know the traditional melody for Te Deum, because it is a hymn, after all.

I don't know the melody, either - but if you can read music, get a Liber Usualis. If you can't read music, get one anyway. ;)
