LOL I second that nomination, dump it and install Linux. In the end, Linux will win. Well for now I run dual installations; Windows/Linux. Pretty soon though, Linux will take over the OS market.

Yes Linux does have commercial support and has had it for years. Actually it’s better support than what Bill Gate$ provides, IMO.

Well Durelen I would like to get it.....but its not as user friendly as Windows is. If you look at the different operating systems that have came out, none of them are as user friendly as Windows. Of course this is just my opinion.

Well I have XP along with Zone Alarm which is a hacker and virus protector. I love XP because it is very fast and has a lot more features than 98. 98 is what I used to have until my father upgraded our computers to ME, then XP. I highly recomend getting XP.

If you get XP, I also suggest getting a virus/hacker protecter like Zone Alarm or Nortain Anti-Virus. I have both for double protection. ;)
Having Zone Alarm and Norton Antivirus is not having double protection.....Zone Alarm is a Firewall period and Norton Antivirus is of course an antivirus.....A firewall and an antivirus are totally different things, but the two of them together is full protection....Having only one or the other these days is suicide on your computer, lol.......When you are talking about double protection you do not want to have "double protection" because that would mean having 2 firewalls or 2 antivirues and you cannot do that, otherwise they will just conflict.... As for your choices of Zone Alarm and Norton Antivirus they are a good combination, personally I use Norton Internet Security instead of Zone Alarm, but on older systems it tends to lag......

I second that, until Linex becomes as user friendly or even friendlier than windows than it doesn't stand much of a chance making it onto the market, plus if it mainstreams then you won't have your free software anymore and it'll be just another microsoft and everyone will hate it just as much as they hate microsoft (my opinion, keep u'r free software, it has caused me more headaches than windows ever has :D ).....

Free? I usually pay for it. Yes you can get a version of it for free (as it will always be...) but you can pay and get more with it and support the developers at the same time. Actually Linux has already become pretty user friendly and is getting more so with each release. I’m not ready to toss all my versions of windows yet but the day will come when Linux surpasses Windows on the user-friendly market. It’s just a matter of time.

I agree with the 'more features' comment. But Xp isn't very fast. I have it, and I've been told by other people who have it that it's much slower than Windows 98. We all could be wrong though. :p

And I have Zone Alarm too... running at all times. I still got a trojan though, and it was hard to get rid of. :D

That's why I keep saying there is a difference between XP home and XP Pro because the Pro is faster than the Home version and it seems like everyone has the home version......

Actually, Pro does run better, especially on old PC's.......but I have 2 PC's setup here (I keep reinstalling everything to play around).....1 with Home, 1 with pro, they are identical computers, both Celeron 2.2ghz, 768mb ram and there is a noticable difference in the speed between the Home and Pro, the Pro does load faster and it also loads programs faster.....
You need to try that test with a real processor like an AMD Athlon and not those cheap Celerons. :p

Actually "double protection" would be Zone Alarm along with a LinkSys router.
That way you have a software and a hardware firewall.
Now THAT is double protection. ;)

You can keep Norton's, and MacAfee as they are system troublemakers. :p

yes, I was thinking the same thing and I'm tired of them telling me to switch to linex or whatever else, I've had it and I don't like it, yet you tell someone that and they are all down your throat and I'm not saying that anyone has been like that here, but other forums are like that most definetly....

Thats intelligent. Research before you speak. Because of the nature of open source (huge community of contributors, every donation carefully documented, more checks and balances than any other institution anywhere, and best of all, NO OWNER), free software will never go anywhere. There are millions of people out there, including myself, dedicated to never letting that happen. How do you think that even with M$'s power, Linux's popularity has been going up and up? M$ now admits that Linux is a viable threat to their market share. Is that not enough proof for anyone?

As far as user-friendly goes, what do you need? An internet connection wizard? Got it. A pretty little preferences menu? Got it. Start menu? Got it. GUIs for everything? Got them. Anything else? You name it, Linux has an easy to use alternative.

And you'll never find a Linux application sending your personal information over the internet to a central database located on a M$ server.

LinuxChique I work with Linux all the time....I am a system Admin and Web Designer so I had to learn to use them. I like linux, but its not as I have said....I will stick with Microsoft Windows, until one, Linux proves to me that they actually will share the market.

And I turn those things off ;) that send out personal information over the internet.

A quick google turns up these stories:

http://www.linuxworld.com/story/32648.htm
http://news.com.com/2100-1001-243527.html?legacy=cnet
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/developer/0,39020387,2132628,00.htm
http://www.cnn.com/2002/TECH/09/03/hln.wired.linux/index.html

I'm not saying Linux is bigger than M$, but I am saying Linux has already proven itself to have taken share of M$'s market.
