  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

i'm leaning toward self first because how can i love my family if i dont love myself first?
I understand what you are saying.
You would be part of family however.
But , I agree you have to love yourself within the proper guidelines.
Not in a egotistical, narcissistic manner.
Which I don't believe you mean at all.
May I ask why you are presenting this question?

i can see how "myself" would be included in family though. ok
i just asked because i heard something like this earlier, and instead of taking it at face value, decided to get other peoples input too.

God is first.

Of course, after this comes family because God our Father is so about family.

But if you don't take care of yourself, you can't keep on being really good for your family. So, you need to come first.

But there are people of your church, hopefully, who are helping you with their good example so you can take care of yourself and be so good for your family; so these Jesus family people might be your real family, then, and so they come first.

But if they are so blessed, you do not need to give them a lot of your attention and resources and help; so the ones who need you more, practically and timewise, are first.

And there are times when your enemies might need you and God has you loving them; so this can mean they are first. Jesus died on the cross for us who were His enemies; He could have been putting Heaven first by being in Heaven; but, for some time, putting our Father first meant suffering and dying like He did, on the cross. In a way, He was putting us first while He was on the cross instead of in Heaven.

Even though we were enemies, Jesus on the cross was investing in who we would become with Him. So, at times we are investing in who people will become later.

God alone, then, can know who should at any time be first for our attention and time and money . . . and honey . . . and enjoyment.

Hmm . . . maybe in my case, my lady friend is first for resources and enjoyment. But she is so kind and caring with any and all people. Even while she is criticizing obviously wrong people, she is saying things caring about them . . . while I tend to suspect people and pick and choose whom I despise . . . self-righteously.

But - - - as I get more real in following her good example, by being kind and helping ones she cares about . . . ones so indeed undeserving . . . I am honoring and appreciating her so maybe we could say I am putting her first. And this would be honoring and appreciating God who is all-loving, and therefore keeping Him first in how I relate with her and evaluate her, instead of only trying to use her for what I want.

Ah-hah > why are we putting someone first, then? This would have something to do with it :)

GOD ---> Others (which includes family)

I don't see mention of "self". I suspect that we are to focus on God and others and let God focus on taking care of ourselves instead of doing that ourselves.

That pretty much sums it up for Christians ( followers of Christ ) as he commands us in his Word
Amen

family or self?

we know its God first but what's second? your thoughts please.

I think the commandment to "love our neighbors as we love ourselves" clearly states that we already love ourselves and we loved ourselves first than anyone else.

I think that verse is saying that it comes naturally to "love" ourself and put ourselves first ...

Now this is different from taking care of the body God gave us but rather is more about putting our desires over those of others...which even an innocent small child has no problem doing naturally.
