A person who is saved will do the works because of a new heart, being born again into the family of God. No one can work their way into heaven, but they can receive the free gift of God that Jesus provided as a substitute sacrifice or payment for our sins. The good works just follow. To put the works before Jesus would mean that we don't need a Savior and that we are good enough and sinless on our own merits to gain salvation. There is salvation in one name only - Jesus. Works are the natural result of a changed heart that wants to obey God in all things. They follow the works of their master, Jesus, who freed the captive, healed the sick, fed the poor, and basically gave His life to others. Our example is Christ.
