I am going copy something that I posted previously on another forum. This will offer you a quick overview of the Bible and hopefully help you in some way to avoid some of the confusion when reading. Although it doesn’t go into specifics it will at least give direction as to what is written to you as a member of the body of Christ and what is written for our learning

Please note when I speak of the Church I am not referencing a structure. The word Church {ekklēsia} simply means “called of God” or “called out” We …you me all those who are born again of God make up the church…we are the called of God, the Church of the body of Christ.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

**
The basic topic from Genesis 3:15 to revelation 22:21 is Jesus Christ

The seven Church epistles Romans, I & II Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and I & II Thessalonians are addressed directly to those of us in this age of Grace, the Church administration; those of us born again in the body of Christ…in other words …you.

{There are some portions as seen between Romans 9 and 12 that Paul (by revelation) is addressing Israel, and then the Gentiles in chapter 11; although it may seem confusing, it’s not, as long as you read what is written and to whom it is written.}

To break it down a bit Romans Ephesians and Thessalonians are doctrinal epistles for the walk of the believers in the Body of Christ the remaining church epistles are either reproof or correction epistles to get the believers back to the right believing of the doctrine. Thessalonians although doctrinal epistles somewhat stands alone as they deal primarily with the return of our Lord Jesus Christ and the gathering of the Church of the Body
I & II Timothy & Titus {I will include Philemon although there is some disagreement with this} are called the Pastoral Epistles, these are written to the Church but are directed towards leadership within of the Body of Christ.

Hebrews is not addressed to the church in the sense that we know the Church established on Pentecost. It is addressed to born again believers but those who have never walked in the freedom of the new birth, those who are still zealous for the law.

James Much like Hebrews was written to the Christian Jews of the dispersion, “the twelve tribes scattered abroad”. Those born again who seemed to want to put themselves under the law. I & II Peter, I II & III John and Jude closely align themselves to this category also.
The reason so much of this seems applicable to many of us is that we find ourselves not believing the doctrinal Epistles of Romans, Ephesians, and Thessalonians and desire to put ourselves under the law.

The four Gospels give the account of the life and walk of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ from four different perspectives Matthew as the King Mark as the Servant Luke as the Man and John as the Son
Although the Gospels are vitally important in our understanding of what Jesus Christ accomplished by his walk, death, and resurrection it must be noted that Jesus Christ came to minister to Israel the Bride. Israel rejected him and killed their King, Jesus {the Bridegroom}. The church of the bride is at this time held in abeyance and picks up again in Revelation The Gospels are not addressed directly to us; they are for our learning as is all of the Old Testament. All of the Old Testament including the four Gospels is addressed to either the Jews or the Gentiles but the Epistles as noted above are specifically addressed to the Church of the Body.

Now this is an area that can get somewhat involved so at this time I won’t go into any depth. But please note that there is a big difference between the two {both bride and body} that if not distinguished will cause you much confusion.
Acts is the fulcrum point between the Old and New Testament it shows the rise and expansion of the first century Church of the body

The Old Testament books are divided up into various categories or administrations depending on who you talk to, but I will not delve in to that at this time. Just keep in mind that The Epistles as I stated above are addressed directly to you as members of the Body of Christ.

One of the most important things in studying is not how much you read, but what you retain and understand from reading. As you continue to put on the Word in your life God will give the increase, both in knowledge and understanding. Your length of time as Christian is relatively insignificant as compared to your attitude. Your desire to learn, to grow, and to develop your relationship with God is an attitude of heart that will carry you further and faster then time ever can.

The gospel of John and 1st John (the first of his three letters) are recommended to newer believers. Or you can do what I did, read the whole New Testament from Matthew to Revelation. Or, if you've found a church or Bible study, try making the focus of what they are teaching to be the center of your reading. But if it's really advanced stuff (like end-times prophesies in Daniel and Revelation) I suggest simpler fare like one of those two John books.

Thank you and God Bless for the replies. I have one other question that has came to me that I'd like to ask.

I recently created a Family Guy based forum online that deals with discussion of the Family Guy cartoon series and I have been wondering if watching or having anything to do with that is a sin, because I have been thinking and would like to get rid of it if so.

God Bless,
Justin.

man, i think praying to God and asking him to lead you through the bible and open it up to you is the most important thing, period. becuase it is the unseen power of God that changes us, not us learning any amount of truth with our mind. thats why solomon wanted to have understanding IN HIS HEART, not his brain. it has to be a relationship with Jesus.

but certainly, start with the 4 gospels.

but remember, the bible is not a self study God sent you home with to memorise and recite to him when you see him again.
it is a present he wants to help you unwrap and walk you through himself, for the rest of your life.
the bible doesnt really work if we read it without having an open line of fellowship with him. you may learn, but God isnt really interested in you being educated, rather changed and that takes the power of God.

the bible said the word of God killed the pharisees and such, but the spirit of God brings us life.

read it with him, he is most important.
he can walk you through it, but it cant replace knowing him for yourself.

Hello,

I'm new to the Christian faith and I'd like to know where would be the best place in the bible to start reading/understanding.

 God Bless,
Justin.

Justin,

I recommend that you get hold of a copy of Unlocking The Bible Omnibus - A Unique Overview Of The Whole Bible by David Pawson available online from either www.anchor-recordings.com (UK) or www.Goodseed.org (USA) or your local Christian bookstore or public lending library and read it in conjunction with the Bible itself. I know you will not be disappointed.

Every blessing in Christ (Eph.1:3)

Hi Justin!

Welcome to God's family :groupray: . I hope you find lots of answers to your questions here at CF. Please ask away!

I'm vaguely familiar with Family Guy. I commend you for being sensitive and not wanting to be involved in anything that is not pleasing to God. Before I gave you my opinion, I did a search online and read some of the quotes from the show. You're probably hearing the Holy Spirit convicting you that it's not godly to be watching this show. It may not be a sin per se, but ask yourself if it's drawing you closer to God, or further away. When you are watching it, would Jesus be pleased to sit next to you on your couch and home and laugh along with you? If not, then it's probably not beneficial for you.

I know this is hard. There were shows I watched before I became a Christian, but the Holy Spirit convicted me and I knew it was not glorifying to God. Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot on TV these days that is good, wholesome fun. You are going to find as you grow in the Lord that your likes and dislikes will change quite a bit as he molds you more and more into the likeness of His Son. I pray that you will heed his guidance and listen to the Holy Spirit within you.

Praise God for saving you and bringing you back into relationship with Himself. This is the reason you were created! :amen:

God bless you,

Jill/WashedClean

Hello,

I'd like to also ask your thoughts on another show that I used to watch all the time, and almost have my collection of DVDs of the show completed, but b4 I decide to finish that collection or throw it all away, I'd like to gather your thoughts on it.

The show is "Sanford and Son". I'm sure almost everyone has seen it or at least heard of it :). I don't think I would be sent to hell for watching it, but if it's going to hurt me as a Christian, I don't need it.

God Bless,
Justin.

I started out with the New Testament. Once I finished that, I went onto the Old. I think the New Testament is a good builder of faith in Jesus Christ and helps you to understand more what He has done for us. I tend to think of the Old Testament as history. It is important of course, but the New Testament helps build your faith. Good luck. Congratulations on becoming a new Christian. It is awesome isn't it?
