I hope this is ok to ask here, if not then I will not be upset if the mods delete or it or move it somewhere else. Also please forgive me for typing this in English, but I do not know Spanish- but hopefully I will start learning it with my kids. Each summer I try to keep my kids interested in learning by letting them choice a subject they want to know more about. This summer they have chosen Spanish! I think it’s great they both want to tackle a foreign langue—but I know very little Spanish and was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions one software or workbooks on Spanish or any tips for learning Spanish?

:D Hi,
I am taking spanish, and my teacher used this program like the first week or two of school.

Check it out:

Hope I helped :

Thank you, it looks like a very interesting and fun way to learn, and it seems to be at the right age level for my kids. I’ll check into it. What I think I will have the most trouble with is pronunciation—so any audio learning tools will certainly be helpful.

Try school. Pronounciation:

LL == english Y or J
y == English Y or J
j == english H
h == Silent
Z == english S
a == AH
e == Ay (like plate)
i == EE
o == OH
u == OO
rr == rolled R
r = slightly rolled r, or can be said like a D or L in some words.

thats about it...

Thank you for the Pronunciation guide, as for trying school—my children’s school does not have a foreign language program. I am considering taking Spanish I in the fall, but that is many months away and I would like to get a head start on it.

Also, if you hear someone from Spain speaking Spanish, they'll pronounce the letters "z" and "c" before e or i, like "th" in think.

For example, the word for five, cinco, would be pronounced "thinko" by a Spaniard.
It is not exactly an English "th" but it is really close.

A fun idea might be to watch their favorite movies in Spanish, maybe with English subtitles. if they know the movies well I think it will be helpful, especially for learning the rhythm of the language, and maybe for picking up some useful phrases. Also it would be fun. :)

Also, one thing I love to do, which might not be your cup of tea though, is pray the rosary in Spanish. I love the rhythm of it in Spanish.

You might also go to one of the grocery stores that has all their signs in Spanish. :)
