  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I recommend, if you can, first buying a book that covers the bible for children to begin with. I have one called "Bible Stories for Bedtime" published by HumbleCreek that starts in Genesis and goes through Revelation in easy, short chapters. That way you can get the jist of the bible before you start on the real thing. To make reading easier, I also recommend you get a NCV, NIV, or CEV since these are translated into the modern way of conversation.

AbsoluteTruth.net recommends you start in the Gospel of John but also read these chapters first, as well, to learn the important basics of the Christian walk:

"Matthew 5-7 - The famous "sermon on the mount" that gives practical instructions on how to live like Jesus
Romans 6 - How to say "no" to sin in your life and the victory Jesus gives.
Romans 5 - What the death of Jesus means to you
Colossians 3 - The Christian life in a nutshell
Hebrews 11 - The Bible's "Hall of Faith"
Revelation 20-21 - The ultimate conclusion to God's plan
Proverbs - Practical wisdom and discipline for life
1 Corinthians 13 - The "love" chapter."

Jot down that list, throw the Gospel of John either at the top or bottom, and get to it. When you're reading, try to visualize the scene in your mind. Take your time and stop to reflect on what you have read. Meditate as to how you could use it in your life.

Much love. :)

First, are you attending a church with strong Bible teaching? If not, then definitely do so. Because having a strong community of believers is immensely helpful for a new believer. See if your church has a class for new believers. If not, try suggesting one as there may be others there who could benefit as well. If you attend a small church, this may not be available, though. If not, then join a small group Bible study class and/or adult Sunday School classes. For someone just starting to read the Bible anew, studying with other people can help.

For your own study, I definitely suggest reading the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John).

Many people suggest John first because it's more spiritually focused on theology over the other gospels. But it can be a little overwhelming to digest for new believers.

I actually suggest studying Mark first. It's the shortest of the gospels, and it's more action focused helping you get a more practical perspective of the person of Jesus and following him.

Hmmm... Why not start with Luke? I mean, it's simpler. E.g. Matthew the EX-tax collector tend to be detailed. John.. well.... I discover a lot of things in John.... Ok whatever... Reading a bible is like how a cow eats (literally), chew it up, swallow, digest a bit, chew again and swallow back.... :-(Well, pardon the gross stuffs, but u get what I mean right? Read it, figure out what it means, then when u have time, maybe re-read again...... Hey, u'll find there's a lot more in the bible than parables or lessons... LIVE IT! There's a new thing everytime u read it. You can never stop by reading it ONCE...:-D

First of all, welcome to the forums my friend
And that you will walk in your relationship with Jesus
Through not just going to church but through
Prayer and Bible study as well as just
Being around maturer Christians
Hope those Bible lessons will do and that
You should also read the Gospels of
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John to get you
Off to a great start! Hope that helps you out!:amen:

After you read the Gospels, I would suggest reading one chapter at a time from Genesis to Revelation, or one chapter of the NT and OT. This will allow you to look at the entire Bible and slowly see how everything connects. I took 4 years in high school and read through the whole Bible one chapter at a time, and I will never regret doing that. It took a long time, but it really helped me to grow. The Bible in one year was just too much for me to handle.

Welcome to the boards, and most importantly welcome to the Body of Christ!

I agree! :D

I find books like Colossians, Ephesians and Phillipians are actually great books to learn from, as well as the gospels

God bless you as you learn more about Him!

I would start with the Gospel of John. Any one of the Gospels is always a good place to start.

If you read the Gospel of John; I would then go through 1-3 John. Those are awsome teaching books. Romans is where I would go next.

Hope this helps!!! God Bless!!!

I'm a new Christian too, and I just started with the NT and read through it- I went back and reread stuff too. Then I went and read Genesis and Exodus. Now I plan to skip around- read some of the Prophets, Proverbs, etc. It's a BIG book! I also recommend getting involved in a bible study- even if it's an informal one with a couple of friends. That's what I'm doing at the moment- I have a friend who's led a lot of bible studies and did ministry in college, so she's got a solid hold on how to study, and it's been great for both of us.

I'm also taking a class for new Christians, or people who don't know anything about Christianity- the particular one I'm going to is called Alpha and apparently, it's a national thing, offered at lots of different churches. But I'm sure that your church offers some sort of "newcomers" class- besides Alpha, my church does a couple of other 1-day (fullday) courses. If your church has some sort of meeting group (community group, we call them at my church), especially one for young professionals, look into that- it's good to meet other Christians and chat about your thoughts.

How about reading one of the gospels, then Acts, then Ephesians?
