We know it doesn't work for things older than about 50,000 years. Dinosaur bones can be dated using radiometric dating. While carbon decays too fast to be used to date dinosaur bones, there are other radioactive elements we can use to date them. Principally, we use Uranium 235, Uranium 238, and Potassium 40. These elements don't exist in the bones themselves, but rather are found in igneous rock. This rock sandwiches the sedimentary rock in which dinosaur bones are found in. Thus, we can date the igneous rock and work out the age of the bone's layer, and thus the bone itself.How old are dinosaur bones? How do we date them?

'Sandwiched' just means 'there's two layers of igneous rock, and a fossil in between'. We know a fossil is sandwiched by simply looked at the rock above and below it.How do we know for sure that they're sandwiched?
