"Good decisions gone wrong"
Well, you might say. How can a good decision go wrong? That is what I am going to explain to you. First let's start in Genesis,25 and starting in verse 24
Genesis 25:24-34
24And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
26And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
27And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
28And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
30And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
31And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
32And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
33And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
34Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
We see a story here of two brothers. One was so hungry he thought he might die. And the other had the food that would suffice him. Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of pottage that would suffice him for a short time. But his birth right would be gone for ever. What are we as christians willing to sell for sin? Sin is only fun for a season. When we feed our spirit our flesh get's weak. Not only does it get weak it get's hungry. Our flesh eventually is starving for sin. Just like esau. It's starving for just a bowl of sin. Just that little bit of sin could be selling your testimony. A testimony takes years to build up but seconds to destroy. You are starving for a drink. But if you take that one drink your testimony is sold. Will christian take that chance for our testimony to be sold? It happens daily. What would you do or what would your flesh do for one drink? One sneak at porno? One immoral sin? Is it worth your testimony? or your purity? there are many things that we could put in there? A good choice, Esau was hungry. How did it go bad? He sold his birthright. Your flesh is hungry a good choice to feed it. Losing your testimony is how it goes bad.
My next example comes from a story of adultry and murder. This story takes place in 2 Samuel 11.
2 Samuel 11:1-15
1And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.
2And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
3And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
4And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
5And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
6And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.
7And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered.
8And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king.
9But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
10And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house?
11And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
12And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.
13And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
14And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
15And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.
Wow that is a lot but i think you get the jest of the story. David stayed home from war. And found himself in sexual sins. Getting a women pregnant. And trying to make it right in his eyes he murders.Let's say we as a christian mess up and in order for us to make it right someone else's testimony has to be murdered. But in our eyes it seems right. In our flesh it seems right. Let's say a young man get's a girl pregnant and the only way to make it right is to marry her. But by him trying to make it right her testimony dies in the process. B/c they both were doing wrong. If you don't want to ruin someone else testimony b/c of your own sin. You shouldn't be fooling around to begin w/. But when we mess up in our human flesh we try and cover that up w/ something else. It all unfolds eventually and we are found out in the end. David made a good choice to make it right. It went bad when Uriah died.
Next, let's move to Job and switch gears somewhat. You know the story of Job, i'm not gonna post scripture for sake of length. Job lost his children his job everything all in one day. A man we as christians should admire and look up too and try and be like. Job, despite everything that had happened to him. He chose to stand. Job's good choice was to stand for God. The gone wrong part was ... get ready. Everyone turned there back on him. His wife told him to curse God and die. His friends giving him bad advice. Job took a stand for right and no one like it. Even if you family turns their back on you. Stand! If you friends think you've gone and lost your mind. Stand! Job had stood after he lost everything even his wife. A man that had every right to say that's it i'm done God no more. He stood. What a man. Are we mini Job's? If you are gonna be a Job, you need good friends to be accountable too. That'll give you good godly advice. And point you in the right direction back towards God when something bad happens.
And last but definitly not least. The story of the betrayel of Jesus. Judas sold out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. And Jesus died upon a tree for us. Judas made a good choice he fulfilled prophecy. The bad part Jesus had to die. Are we Judas'? Do we sell out our spirituality for a few extra bucks and skip out on church? Does money mean more to us than Jesus or our spirit? How much is Jesus worth to you? How much is your walk w/ God worth to you? 30 dollars? 30,000 dollars? To work more and spend less time w/ God? Is that how much he is worth to you. Jesus should be priceless to you. Alcohol....30 bucks. Drugs....50 bucks. Cigarettes...30 bucks. Jesus in my everyday life priceless. How much does he mean to you?
