John was greater than Elijah even though he went forth in the Spirit of Elijah , so why send him again?
I am not sure how you exalt John above Elijah, who was taken directly to heaven. The Lord has
placed John as greater than all that are born of women, but least among those in the kingdom of
heaven. I would place Elijah among those who are a part of the kingdom. Elijah appeared with
the Lord on the mount did he not? No headless John's there. The 3 apostles were witnesses to
Christ's glory in His kingdom. Moses and Elijah appeared with him. I agree, this is a tricky subject,
so please do not be too quick to dismiss other viewpoints. I appreciate yours.

Hi MM and others,
What do you think "more than a Prophet " means?
Not sure myself.
He was more than a prophet because he came as "a voice calling from the wilderness",
in other words, the fulfillment of prophecy, as the forerunner of the One who was to come.
"prepare the way, make your paths straight".
Also,

John 1:
15
John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, This was He of whom I said,
He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.
26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water, but there stands One among you
whom you do not know.
27 It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap
I am not worthy to loose.
....
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold!
The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
30 This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me,
for He was before me.’
31 I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came
baptizing with water.”
32 And John bore witness, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven
like a dove, and He remained upon Him.
33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me,
Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He
who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.

Pretty special stuff! In short, he was His chosen witness, who bore testimony
to that which he saw, and was instructed to look for from God. Whenever it
doesn't seem like I am getting enough information, I go to the Gospel of John.
