When Does your Christmas Start?

December 1st is when I put out decorations and start listening to Christmas music. Although currently rethinking it since it's making for an awkward end of November due to an early Thanksgiving.

Christmas only starts on Christmas day and extends on from then. Advent only started tonight as the vigil for the first Sunday of Advent. The Christmas tree never arrives until at least the first Sunday of advent and it rests undecorated for it's first week. Only after that is it decorated. And it stays into January. Shopping never starts until at least advent and nobody open on Thanksgiving gets any of my business. I avoid the Black Friday hype as well.

I agree with you. To me, Advent is the start of the season, but is not Christmas. As a child, the tree was decorated on Christmas Eve day, since we were off from school. Now, we usually don't start decorating until about 3 weeks before Christmas. This year is different due to my wife being the host of the lady's group this time. It seems we are past the fall decorating scheme, but she wanted to have something. So our Christmas decorating started early. But the Nativity scenes and other religious décor will wait for the appropriate time.

On the opposite end, I also like to keep Christmas going until the Epiphany, and even a few days further into January. After that the Christmas stuff goes away, but the seasonal décor is out until February or March.

When I was seven, Daddy made us all wooden reindeer with holly painted on their necks, like a collar. They're about 3 feet tall, and every year I set mine out on the porch with a sign: "Please don't feed the funny-looking moose."

For me, it is weeks too early, like it is a sin to be starting in November, even before Advent begins. We will save the rest for a couple of weeks, at least until early December. But I feel like we are following the secular trends where the Christmas season in the stores begins immediately after Halloween.

But this has become the time of year where I almost never listen to the radio (not that I do a ton anyway) and avoid stores like the plague because of the commercial rush. But it's not all the retailers; I saw a house or two that even had lights up before Thanksgiving. It makes me sick of it even before it gets here.

I think there should be a law against taking down decorations before March. The last part of winter is so bleak, cold, and depressing. It needs color, ha!

Depressing to me is Christmas decs up wayyy too long. Besides part of what makes them so special is they're only up for a few weeks. But, to each their own!

I think he means winter seasonal. Not Christmas seasonal

I was not clear. The Christmas décor comes down right after the Epiphany, but then my wife puts out snowmen, snowflakes and other winter stuff. She decorates by the season and major holidays, with Spring and Summer blending together after Easter. But Autumn (with associated holidays) and Winter (following Christmas) each have their own décor.

I see Christmas as starting on Christmas Eve and ending with the Epiphany. So about two weeks. Decorations usually go up in early December and come down in early January. So about a month.

Hey come on, we moose have to eat too. Especially during the winter when foraging is difficult. But that wooden reindeer is a family treasure now and a reminder of your dad and Christmas' past.

We had a couple of cats when my children were young, as did my mother-in-law. Our cats didn't climb the tree but did bat at the low hanging ornaments. My Mom-in-law's cat did climb the tree, so that we would see the tree moving and the branches shaking and we knew what was going on.

I love the idea of winter decorations! You folks are so smart. I think I'll make some!

If it were up to me, I'm so lazy that if I put out Christmas decorations, I'd not bother taking them down. Leave for the next Christmas

hey, BCP. Are there unique Australian Christmas and holiday songs? Hard to sing about "dashing through the snow" or a "white Christmas", since it is summer there.
