  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There is no way to prove that an unborn child is not actually a person, nor can you prove that this separate life does not have a soul.

When Does Life Begin?
Many internationally-known geneticists and biologists have testified that human life begins at conception. In 1981 (April 23-24) a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee held hearings on the very question: When does human life begin? Following are testimonies from two of the doctors who testified:
1. Dr. Hymie Gordon, Chairman of the Department of Genetics at the Mayo Clinic, said: "By all the criteria of modern molecular biology, life is present from the moment of conception."
2. Dr. McCarthy de Mere, a medical doctor and law professor at the University of Tennessee, testified: "The exact moment of the beginning of personhood and of the human body is at the moment of conception."
"The Father of Modern Genetics" Testifies
Dr. Jerome Lejeune, known as "The Father of Modern Genetics," also testified that human life begins at conception before the Louisiana Legislature's House Committee on the Administration of Criminal Justice on June 7, 1990.
Dr. Lejeune explained that within three to seven days after fertilization we can determine if the new human being is a boy or a girl. "At no time," Dr. Lejeune said, "is the human being a blob of protoplasm. As far as your nature is concerned, I see no difference between the early person that you were at conception and the late person which you are now. You were, and are, a human being."
Dr. Lejeune also pointed out that each human being is unique -- different from the mother -- from the moment of conception. He said, "Recent discoveries by Dr. Alec Jeffreys of England demonstrate that this information [on the DNA molecule] is stored by a system of bar codes not unlike those found on products at the supermarket...it's not any longer a theory that each of us is unique."
Baby at 8 Weeks - Consider this Doctor's Testimony

Statement by Paul E. Rockwell, M.D.: "Eleven years ago while giving an anesthetic for a ruptured ectopic pregnancy (at 8 weeks gestation), I was handed what I believe was the smallest living human ever seen. The embryonic sac was intact and transparent. Within the sac was a tiny human male swimming extremely vigorously in the amniotic fluid, while attached to the wall by the umbilical cord. This tiny human was perfectly developed, with long, tapering fingers, feet and toes. It was almost transparent, as regards the skin, and the delicate arteries and veins were prominent to the ends of the fingers."
Dr. Rockwell continues, "The baby was extremely alive and swam about the sac approximately one time per second, with a natural swimmer's stroke. This tiny human did not look at all like the photos and drawings and models of 'embryos' which I had seen, nor did it look like a few embryos I have been able to observe since then, obviously because this one was alive! When the sac was opened, the tiny human immediately lost his life and took on the appearance of what is accepted as the appearance of an embryo at this stage of life (with blunt extremities etc.)."
The statement by Paul E. Rockwell, M.D., an anesthesiologist, was quoted by Dr. and Mrs. J.C. Willke in their Handbook on Abortion.

This is just amazing! All these years we have been told that the fetus does not become animated (start moving) until 12 weeks gestation. It sounds like there has been a big lie going on all these years.

Thanks for posting this.

Life begins when the fetus takes its first breath of air.
Air is a very subjective word, I like to think that you are speaking of oxygen, the necessary element that keeps us alive....well, you should know that just because the fetus is not breathing on its own with its lungs, it is very well oxygenated by the blood supply it receives via the umbilical cord.

I am speaking of when the fetus breathes air with its own lungs for the very first time.

I definitely do think that human life begins at conception. All the evidence points towards this anyway!!

And I imagine this information was posted from a pro-life source.

Hey, pro-choicers do the same thing, myself included. I don't think the passage posted is completely fiction or anything, just I think there are compelling arguments on both sides.

I'd prefer a passage from a non-partisan site - a bit more unbiased, and therefore, a lot more believable.

Life begins at conception.
But I don't consider a zygote to be comparatively valuable form of life.
Maybe that is because you don't believe in God. What makes a life valuable? Where does life come from?

I can't prove that a Z/E/F has no soul...can you prove that it does?
What is a Z/E/F?

There are many answers with the Scriptures if one just reads and listens to the Lord.

In Luke 1:41,44, the Bible states that “the babe leaped in her womb.” The word for “babe” in these passages is the Greek term brephos, and is used here for an unborn fetus. The same word is used in both Luke 18:15 and Acts 7:19 for young or newborn children. It also is used in Luke 2:12,16 for the newborn Christ-child.
.
In Psalm 139 13-16 David speaks of himself using words like I and me while in his mothers womb. The Bible acknowledges that David was a human being while he inhabited his mother’s womb.

For thou didst form my inward parts: Thou didst cover me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks unto thee; For I am fearfully and wonderfully made: Wonderful are thy works; And that my soul knoweth right well. My frame was not hidden from thee, When I was made in secret, And curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see mine unformed substance; And in thy book they were all written, Even the days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was none of them.

In Jeremiah 1:4-5
Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

The unborn child hiccups, sucks his thumb, wakes, and sleeps. The unborn child responds to touch, pain, cold, sound, and light.

Maybe that is because you don't believe in God. What makes a life valuable

It is possible, and even likely that my opinions on abortion would be different if I believed in god. You are right on that point.

What makes life valuable? It is a good question, and it deserves a bit of thought. From my rather atheist/agnostic perspective, life really isn't valuable in the great scheme of things. Really, I don't think we actually contribute anything of any benefit to the universe, so our value is virtually nil.

But, as a human, my view is biased because of my subjective viewpoint. It is speciocentricity, and as a human I believe that my life and everyone else's life is valuable.

I do value the life of an unborn child, but really, I value the life and the RIGHTS of the mother a lot more.

Where does life come from?

When two people love eachother very much...etc.
I have the feeling you weren't talking about the biological activity that produces a life...as for where life itself comes from...you can use your spiritual beliefs to explain, and I am happy to admit that I don't know.

I respect your right to accept scripture as truth and explanation, but I do not.

Because most of the stuff I have read says that they can;t feel anything at that stage of developement.
And they know this how?

If it is not too much to ask, could you please provide references as to what you have read?!?!?

Well heres a wiki link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fetal_pain

http://www.cmda.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Home&TEMPLATE=/CM/ContentDisplay.cfm&CONTENTID=9030

I just kinda skimmed this one but it seems it says that the earliest that a response that seems to indicate pain occurs is 16 weeks.

http://www.prochoiceactionnetwork-canada.org/articles/fetal-pain.shtml

This one was pretty good too at least for summing things up.

In short though while there isn;t an exact concensus most scientists do not think that before 16 weeks a fetus can feel pain.
