  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

when does life begins, people have different answers to this question but i dont know if anyone looks at it the way i do, i feal that all of my sperm have a life, i mean they have the instinct to swim and try to find there way to the egg so they are all very much alive, really they are the essence of life
if someone asked me how old i am, i really cant tell you, cause i would have to add on the nine months i was inside my mother and add on how ever long it was i was inside my father, which i dont know, and its kinda funny to think about how we all use to live inside other people, for all we know we could be living inside god right now, that is also one way that the universe could be never ending, something else to is that when i was a sperm i probably would have never thought that i would make it to a place where i would grow a head and arms and legs and this whole body, thats one reason why when i leave this form i think i will take on another form and life will still continue for me and all of you
the struggle of a sperm is alot like the struggle of humans, its like we all had the instinct to swim and find our way here and even now we all have the instincted to find our way to something else when we leave here and thats why we all search for the proper guidence from god, so that we can make it to where ever it is he wants us to be

i would just like to know where others stand on this topic, it is real crazy and mind boggling to me

"Life" has a technical definition, such as an organism which consumes, poos, and reproduces. Sperm don't really do any of these things, although they do seem to be "alive" in their behavior. For example, there is debate whether a virus should be consider a life form, but there is no debate that bacteria is life.

While I am "pro-choice", I do not deny a "life" begins at conception, in the most technical sense. However, the question has never really been whether it is a "life", but rather whether it is a "person." I am not convinced a single, fertilized egg is a "person," that should enjoy all the same rights you and I have. The rationale really isn't there in my mind.

An interesting question...let's see how long people stay on point with it.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

The real question is this: "When does sentience begin in the development of a human embryo?"

But in order to dum it down as much as possible....

"When do ya think those little squirmy things on the microscope can start to think?"

So every time your sperm is released without an egg to swim to, you're commiting murder?

laugh so hard it makes you cry

what is murder?
if you die and go to heaven or where ever, then you obviously arent dead, are you?

"for the people that tried to murder me, you wouldnt kill me you would only further me"
a quote of my own

if we were created in gods image and god has no begining and no ending, then niether do we, or life, if you ask me

"i was never born i was only created, so when death comes dont mourn, we made it"
another one

I think that the beginning and the end of life are based on the same criteria. We view death as occurring when brain death or the cessation of brain activity. If we thought otherwise we would have the corpse of great great Grandma hanging around the living room just on the off chance she is really still alive.

Regarding your question in the specifics, sperm are a tissue like blood and spit. The fact they "swim" and seem to show some intelligence is no different than the action and intelligence shown by antibodies. They simply do not fit the biological definition of a life form (although they are "living" tissue just as your skin is "living", at least until it dies and falls off.)

I have a number of things to say to this, and few actually answer your questions. First, there are studies done on this. I'll not say that scientists answered the question, because that will be debated. What I will say, is that you seem to be high. Stoner philosophy, along with remarkably poor typing lead me to this conclusion.

But that is neither here nor there. In regards to your age comment, it's generally a useless thing. Besides, it only matters if taken properly. Unless you wanted to be pathetically rebelious and end your age with, "from conception," there would be absolutely no reason to add nine months to your lifespan.

oh, wus that sapose to be an insult
sorry 4 not bein offended, but its imposible to offend someone who has no fealings

and if all of us didnt have a life when we were a sperm then how could we have got to this point we are at right now, that journey we all took was what led us here, those stages and this one are all different levels of life, life is not defined by peoples thoughts but by the energy of the soul and i had the same soul when i was a sperm that i have now and will continue to have when i leave here, i was an individual then just the same as i am an individual now, and really instincts are thoughts
if you are part of something that is alive like say this solar system, there are planets that one might say are dead but if this solar system is alive which it is, then they have somekind of purpose and as a whole is alive, just the same as my blood we'll say, some might say that it doesnt think so its not a living thing but how does anyone really know if it does or not, it is part of me and i am alive, so it to is alive, just the same as we are all part of something else that is alive right now, this universe, we were part of something alive when we were in our mother and when we were in our father, but at the same time we were all seperated and had our own life

but hey maybe im on cloud nine somewhere in the middle of lala land and i have no idea of what im talking about, but i get no real convincing answer from this question so i will keep thinking what i want about it and maybe even change my viewpoint about it if i feal the need but if you ask me everyone is only guessing what the truth is about this topic, my guess is just real outrageous, i guess

I believe that life begins and ends with breath. The Pneuma in Greek. The wind, spirit, or in Hebrew, ruwach.

That doesn't mean I believe that the person begins with breath (and by extension... life). The person begins either with the sequencing of DNA or maybe with the "intention" of combining DNA strands.
As far as the soul's beginning... hmmm, I am a Sociologist so I tend to think of the soul as the personality... personality begins at birth with interaction between the mind and the environment.

Ah, but do not mind and environment interact even in the womb? Your mind doesn't instantly "turn on" when your head pops out into the air and you certainly are impacted by environmental factors even in the womb.

Well, you are at least in "biological denial land". Sperm are not organisms. Period. They have no more "soul" than your blood (or, for that matter, the woman's ovum that they have to merge with in order to create an organism).

That may be a good point, I have to confess to be rather ignorant about that. I wonder how much interaction is actually going on... I mean, sure the environment impacts the developing person, but is the person able to respond affirmatively (or do I mean actively?) with the environment?

Whee bullplop. You do indeed have feelings, and your denial of them is just plain pathetic. I also notice you have no words in regards to your incompetent writing. How very odd.

The fact of the matter is you've gotten plenty of perfectly satisfactory answers. I maintain the stoner theory.
