• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I feel i obsess over things a bit but i don't know if thats OCD or just me obessing. I don't know if i should see a docter i also don't know what would treatments be for OCD? I do not wish to take any meds or anything like that for OCD so if thats the only thing i would be offerd i don't think there would be much use in finding out for my self. So my question is, how did you know it was time to check it out? what point to you get when it was time to find out?

I got my OCD diagnosed when it became a large problem. It would have me constantly stressed and it slowed me down to the point where simple actions like going through a doorway or putting on socks took ages.

I got my diagnosis late because I had no clue what my OCD was. I didn't realise I had a mental disorder; I knew something was wrong, but I didn't know what it was until one day I was reading through a medical encyclopedia (as you do!!!!) and came across 'Obsessive Compulsive Disorder'. I immediately recognised myself there. I waited in getting it looked at because I was embarassed, and of course during the wait the OCD grew. If I could go back and advise my old self, I would tell him to go and fight this thing before it got too big!

I don't think it is ever too early to check out what is going on. Remember, you don't have to be certain you have a problem before you ask the doctors - they are there to clarify the situation for you. A person who thinks they might have cancer should by no means wait around until they are sure they have a problem - because then they really will have a problem! What I am trying to say is: there is no harm in just talking to a doctor to find out if there may be a problem. If you catch OCD early, it is easier to treat.

Treatment of OCD typically involves a course of ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention - a form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) coupled with a course of meds. Although it sounds like you don't want the latter - why is that?

Same here, I've had my OCD pretty much my whole life, but I didn't know it.

It was after I became a Christian that it started to REALLY mess with me.

Tell me something, when you guys were little, did you fight your ocd or did you just run with it?

I am not sure if i have OCD. The things i think may be a bit obessive all seem logical to me, the only reason i think it is obessive is becuase some say it has been a bit obessive, but it really hasnt been that way from my point of view all the things i do seem logical, its not like i am doing things that i don't want to do.

My gut reaction is that it isn't OCD. I say this because those with OCD generally have invasive and tormenting fears (to differing degrees) but your problem sounds more like an annoying bother. However, in saying this, I could be way off the mark. I still think that there is no harm in getting yourself checked out by a doctor!
