  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Thanks. Actually it gets very complicated in some areas. Everytime someone thinks they have the advantage over someone else someone else takes that advantage. I think generalizing the domination chain would end up being: human(minority race)<Elemental (majority race)<Government (various)<Realms Sage (five of them)< FBI (who are human) or NecraForce (creepy).

On a side note I just made a list of stories I am working on and discovered to my suprise that there is more Sci-Fi than Fantasy stories, huh, go figure.

I'm just starting out but the genres that interest me most are African American "chick lit" with a subtle Christian theme. Not a "redemptive" Christian theme but more of "God works in mysterious ways/you can move mountains if you put your faith in God" kind of theme.

I think the only theme my writing has in common is that it's often historical fiction. I always looked at writing as being about the people, not the setting. If you confine yourself to a genre, the genre begins to dictate your character's actions instead of you.

Plus, I don't like to write similar things; there are too many things in the world to cover to waste time writing about something you've already explored before.

Greetings everyone- fantastic thread. Thought I'd throw my own in attempting to help people get to know who I am.

As a major in English I am exposed to all kinds of genres and writers. Some I find I thuroughly enjoy and some are real snoozer. Faulknet is not among my favorites.

In my own writings I find myself drawn towards a combination of genre and all of them in fiction.

One thing I have decided to do is follow the examples of John Saul and several others- focusing on the collection of characters who are related by location or family.

Saul wrote the blackstone chronicles about the people in one small town. My own writings are like this with being about the employees and familes associated with the same covert global industry company.

my stories seem to have some of everything. i LOVE suspense and conspiracy, i like to add in some good action, and a kick of comedy and some dramatic undertones never hurt anyone =) i voted for action in the poll, but it was really hard to pick. my stuff could fit under a few of those.

I chose 'something else' as I write just about whatever pops into my head. Alot of times it's philosophical, documenting a good conversation or just thoughts I've had on any particular subject. I do keep my own personal thoughts pretty vague though [on paper at least] just so it sounds more like a story and less like a journal, though a friend and I may compile our journals into a finished piece of work.

I write reality based fiction.

Some are threaded with comedy, some with romance, some with drama, some with variations of all 3. I have several outlines, 3 nearly finished rough novelettes, and one completed 1st part to a romantic comedy trillogy (think my Big Fat Greek Wedding gone product-of-the-flower-child generation with crazy in-law twists too).

Ultimately, I also have a powerful story to write about my grandfather, but that may happen slowly, it's going to take heavy research about the orphan trains in the midwest back around 1910. I need my kids to grow up and empty nest me first to do some of that. That one is pure christian drama. I'll need a male editor to help me think in more masculine terms.

Didn't see my catagory there.

What an interesting thread! I see that, as a writer who focuses mostly on Christian Fantasy, I’m part of the majority (at least with the fantasy part of my genre). In the past I’ve written Regional-Southern, Mainstream, Literary, Mystery, Suspense, SciFi, Occult [from a Christian perspective], Historical Fantasy and a smattering of Horror. I wrote one novel that would have been classified as Romance except that it broke all the rules of that genre, which leaves me not knowing how to classify it. Mostly though I write Christian Fantasy, though it too is quite unique. I have been told there is no author now or previously who writes fantasy that is much if at all like mine, and that is my assessment as well. That could be a good thing, but it makes for a challenge when part of the query process [at least in some cases] is to identify successful authors whose work most closely resembles mine. I’m not worried about it, though; I’am where He wants me to be, doing what He wants me to be doing, so I’ll let Him take care of the rest.

I prefer to write reality-based fiction too. I can't bring myself to write fantasy - I have attempted, but I didn't feel motivated to continue with it. I think it's just that fantasy has no limits, which is great, but I feel comfortable knowing where the boundaries of reality are and working them to suit myself and my story. Also known as manipulating. ;)

Fantasy, but peaceful and slow.

What does it mean to bring more horror into life?

I write fantasy that has some horror in it, which I use to show the monsters of reality. After the horror, there is always hope, which mirrors reality.
