I have always liked 1 Corinthians chapter 13, but now I see the importance of the Gospel in 1 John C3V11-24.
1 John 3:11-24 (English Standard Version)
Love One Another
11For(A) this is the message that you have heard from the beginning,(B) that we should love one another. 12We should not be like(C) Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him?(D) Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous. 13Do not be surprised, brothers,[a](E) that the world hates you. 14We know that(F) we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15(G) Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that(H) no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
16By this we know love, that(I) he laid down his life for us, and(J) we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17But(K) if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet(L) closes his heart against him,(M) how does God’s love abide in him? 18Little children, let us not(N) love in word or talk but in deed and(O) in truth. 19By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. 21Beloved,(P) if our heart does not condemn us,() we have confidence before God; 22and(R) whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and(S) do what pleases him. 23And this is his commandment,(T) that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and(U) love one another,(V) just as he has commanded us. 24(W) Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God,[b] and God[c] in him. And(X) by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.
I emphasized in blue, the above sentence, that strikes me as very important. Love is a most important part of salvation and the life of a Christian. Without it, we are not part of the children of God or the children of Light. The more that I read the New Testament, the more that I see this in the letters of Paul, James, John and Peter. They knew the Lord and kept emphasizing the importance of loving each other as well as being holy (righteous). It would be extremely hard to be one with the perfect love of God (of Jesus' Gospel) and to be unrighteous or immoral. I would say that true righteousness and high morality comes as a result of obeying the commands of Christ in his Father's Gospel to us. Man, too quickly turns the Gospel into his search of a religious practice or system, ignoring the teachings of Christ. I didn't get saved by the teachings of church doctrines, but by the very personal and loving grace of our Father and his obedient son, Jesus Christ.
Every time that I read the New Testament, I hear God speaking through the early eyewitnesses of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wow and what an enduring message, the one that my soul took in at the beginning! As my interest in Christianity became renewed recently (2001), I saw the zeal of many Christians trying to please God through their church's doctrines and theologies. Mental exercises in these areas aren't coming from faith or by the grace that saved us. I have called others to return to that grace of God through obeying and listening to our Lord Jesus Christ, the son of man and the son of God.
I am always searching the New Testament, nowdays, trying to listen to this message from our Father through Jesus, his disciples and messengers. We need to be open to the Will of God given to us through his grace by the sacrifice of his beloved son Jesus. Instead, people aren't listening or that concerned about the Will of God. They want their seal of approval from God to be a long academic search through their church's choosen theologians and thus a man's determination and letter of credibility. The Holy Spirit is uniquely given and "God stated sufficient" for each one of us as creditable servants to the most high. We are commanded one thing above many, "to love one another". Love means respect to the uniqueness of each other’s relationship with their Father. Today, there are heated debates and resulting statements like "I am right over you" or "you are wrong and lost" given to each other. How is it that we obey the command of love, and yet show disrespect towards each other? Will there be no room in one's heart for the grace of God given to us by the blood of his son, Jesus?
Please stand by the teachings and commands of Lord Jesus Christ, the son of God and son of man; and have love, grace and faith; knowing which one of these will last forever. Abide in life and not in death. They don't mix.
