As we come from various parts of the globe, I was wondering what the weather is normally like where you live. Are you basking in the sun, while I'm having wind and rain, or do your temperatures regularly drop below freezing whilst mine are more moderate? Do you long for colder weather to cool you down, or for the sun to warm you up?

I'm on the western side of England, where the climate is temperate: warm (or cool) summers, usually mild winters (with snow or ice sometimes) and plenty of rain, giving lush, green vegetation, although we have had droughts. It can be windy or calm, sometimes hot, occasionally humid, but normally no great extremes of climate. I definitely think the winters are milder than in my childhood.

What about you?

Interesting idea for a thread, Sue!

I live in the state of Texas in the U.S. It is a centrally located southern state. We have mild winters, but it does get cold in the winter, and we do have snow and ice from time to time in the winter. Typically, we only get snow and ice, however, about 2-3 times a winter. Sometimes more.

Our summers, however, are beastly hot. The average summer temps are probably about 95-100 degrees often climbing to 100+ up to 113 or so even. And summertime can be humid too although not as humid as some places.

The Spring and Fall here are nice. My favorite season is Fall when we get a refreshing, cooling break from the intense heat of summer. For example, right now we are having nights in the upper 40-50's and daytime highs of mid to upper 70's.

I tend to like cooler and cold weather better than hot.:)

Thank you for your comments about the thread kaykay. :)

When I think of Texas I think of green ranch-land. Are there deserts at all? The nearest I've been is New Mexico, but we were just travelling through, in an air-conditioned bus, from Arizona to Colorado. I've been to the USA twice, both times in August (1972 and 2000), and found the heat easier to bear than during my European holidays as everywhere was air-conditioned! Also I found the dry heat in the south-west easier to cope with than the humidity I experienced in New York State. Like you I prefer cooler weather.

I like not so hot for sure but cooler weather means shorter days and in Indiana it can snow. I don't like the short days of winter, spring is my favorite for the new beginnings in nature and next would be the first half of fall. Indiana is mainly farm land with city's interspersed.:)

presently 4.C

clouds appear as if they are an ice floe pack
recently broken free from a glacier

with a moonlit clear sky beyond them

feels very very chilly out, without a coat

 I love talking about weather, too, Sue! Minnesota's tagline is "Theater of Seasons" or in everyday, less poetic terms "If you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes!". We seem to do everything to extreme. Our summers can get nearly as hot as Texas, into the triple digits, with sweltering humidity . . which, the latest explanation seems to be, is the direct fault of farmers planting too much corn! And there is plenty of corn here. Or was, it's all black ground now, with a powdered-sugar dusting of fresh snow this morning.

Then there is winter, which we are far more famous for . . the low tonight is predicted to be about 13 degrees F (roughly -11 C) but I can remember times where the governor of the state shut down every institution due to extreme cold, up to -100 F windchills, too dangerous for anyone to be caught outside for more than a few minutes. We often talk in windchill factors because there is rarely a day without SOME wind, and it intensifies whatever the air temp is. We usually get snow in Oct/Nov, and it can last on the ground all the way through to March/April, although it's more common to have it melt once or twice throughout winter, and even occasionally, though very rarely, we have a "Brown Christmas" (not well favored, lol) where there is no snow cover at all.

*grins* It's best to learn to make the best of it, though, and we DO love playing with our snow here, which is probably why this is where the first practical, individualized snowmobile was developed!

I've loved reading about your weather; thank you for your replies. Dave you're not far from me; I think it is going to be in the 40s F tomorrow. From what you say, WB, it's a bit colder up there in the Orkneys.

Kaykay your temperatures sound very pleasant, and must be a relief after a hot summer. The rest of you in the USA seem to be having it very cold. You are all in the north aren't you, although you stretch from New York to Wyoming? The coffee and woodstove sound very inviting blueguy. Worddancer I can't believe it gets so cold in Minnesota, but I suppose that is the continental climate (if I remember my school geography correctly!). What surprised me was the humidity in summer; I've always associate that with the tropics! I think we're having it milder in Britain. I felt the chill on my face when I was out walking tonight, but it wasn't bitter.

Hi Sue Sis'

Good Morning

last night, Jane [a neighbour from across the road] came to the front door
she asked to speak with Mary, who went outside to chat
Jane told her and showed her, what, some teenaged lads had done
to her Mum's garden fencing [Jane, lives next-door, to her Mum]
Mary was only out there for 5 - 6 minutes
but returned indoors shaking, from the chill
It was 'close-to' freezing outside, down from just 4.C at teatime

Winter, is just around the corner [my second xmas, this FAR NORTH] :)

Do you find it colder than in Bristol Dave? We were in Peterborough before, and it seemed colder, but I think the East side of the country is, and it was over 20 years ago. Last night I was out quite early - maybe before it got too cold, or maybe my coat is warmer than I think!

I hope those of you getting snow don't have any problems, but can enjoy it! :)

Oh yes Sue, mind you Bristol too has had it's hoar frosts
It has gotten colder [here] of late
We dont expect to see 10.C again until maybe next March, here

Sheltered from winds [indoors]
I am wearing just a T-shirt with a cotton pullover [George] over it
If, I sit around...
I can feel that I am none to warm
But when I get moving again I do not need to think of
maybe putting on the infra red fire or, the central heating
[just being 'sparing' at the moment]
Which means this will all come in handy 'later'
as we fall deeper into Winter

We got our winter fuel allowance, last week [£250]
which will come in handy so long as there is no interruption in fuel supplies
We don't have a chimney flue in our house
Log fires can only happen 'outside' on bonfire night :(
