husband will buy a ONE time Visa card but they have a $4.95 fee

DO NOT use "one vanilla" as he bought one and it was hacked; it was difficult to get the money back

don't believe anything is safe online so I don't buy online & husband gets the one time card if must
(instead of using our credit card)

needed one this week as child's paint class only allowed online pymt & not in person

I’m not bothered by online shopping. Its made life easier and I have less running around to do.

Not 100% true. There is online fraud as well. There are companies out there (and people) that will steal your credit card information and use it for their own personal gain and sell it to others online. The thing to remember though is google is your friend 10/10 times if a company/person has bad hype on the internet it means they're a scammer.
Right - but it’s pretty easy to do all of one’s online shopping without ever having to deal with a suspicious company. Pretty much everyone uses encryption. I do about 90% of my (non-grocery) shopping online and never have had a problem or had to buy something from a company that I didn’t know was legit. And as you said could just google it if I wasn’t sure.

Isn’t your credit card number always instantly encrypted? Most occasions of stolen credit card numbers are from using it somewhere in person.

It's possible. I don't know if some or all the online retailers' sites do that or not, or if the card number could still be accessed some other way once it's submitted.

FYI sending a check is the most risky way to pay - numerous ppl handle each check and get access to your checking account and routing number, with which you can set up automatic withdrawals etc. Whereas when you use a credit or debit card online, it’s almost always encrypted which means no one has access.

I’m pretty sure all of them do, and it says so when you go to pay so you can be sure.

it's not a matter of whether or not your card no. is safe being sent online, but the fact that every business is at risk of being hacked!

Every store, restaurant, and retailer that has been hacked

does everyone know equifax was breached in 2017?
we did a free credit hold when that happened

Exactly. The more places you do business with, the bigger your chances of your info winding up in the wrong hands. That's why I like having the "virtual card number" used so it wouldn't be any good to anyone after it's been used.

I do. I tried to freeze my credit with the 3 credit bureaus, but I wasn't getting much cooperation from them. I settled for putting a fraud alert on my file which was much easier. It'll expire after one year, so I guess it'll have to be renewed each time. I also have a credit card with Capital One, which also got hacked. I locked my card so it can't be used. I'm sure glad it had that feature.
