There have been some great answers to this question thus far. I will however attempt to add my own 2 cents for what it's worth.
I feel as though guilt can be brought on 2 ways:
1) Satan attacks us with it
2) We bring it on ourselves
In both cases, we are allowing the enemy to bring us down. Yes, in most cases you had to sin in order to feel guilty. However, there are some instances in which you really didn't do anything wrong but the enemy plays with our minds and makes us feel as though we did. The devil is a liar! Guilt is in no way productive in our lives. It does nothing but bring on depression and feelings of hopelessness.
Conviction is the complete opposite though. Conviction is a God-inspired feeling and is there to try and keep you on the right path. Whether you choose to follow that conviction and change or not is up to you completely. If you ignore the conviction and sin anyway however; this could give the enemy allowance to bring in guilt and then produce condemnation. We know by God's Word though that He does not condemn us ever. As someone else mentioned, Romans 8:1 states it clearly:
[bible]Romans 8:1[/bible]
Condemnation is a result of holding on to something that God has already forgiven and set you free from when you asked Him to cleanse you. This is when we must believe and trust in our Father and His love for us...and move forward. The enemy is smart, but praise God we serve a much smarter and more powerful God!
God bless you. I pray this helps you in some way.
