Food for thought, folks. And this video appears to have been made by a fellow Christian, who I believe is doing a good job of keeping the criticism sincere but far from judgmental-sounding of his brethren. So no, this isn't criticism of Christian films done by an angry atheist. Give it a listen.

The problem (besides the bad acting and cheap look) is also that Christian movies are too preachy. People don't go to the movies to be preached at, they go to be entertained. A movie can still have a message but it can be done subtly. Christian movies seem to be all about the message rather than telling a good story.

I agree about the Christian movies, and could argue the same for the music genre. I don't really watch those types of movies anymore, but do listen to Christian music a lot, especially when I'm working. After listening to it for so long, I've just felt that it's been lacking something. Most songs conform to the same mold, and rarely attempt to break out it; it just seems like the same thing repackaged over and over again.

However, I remember stumbling upon this song recently, which was a breath of fresh air:
The song itself was catchy and uplifting, without seeming preachy. As for the video - the cinematography was excellent, it was very creative, and changed things up regularly to keep it interesting. I also admired Switchfoot's philosophy behind their music: Christian music doesn't always need to quote Bible verses or mention God's name in order to be Christian. There should be a deeper meaning and reality behind it.

I think City of Ember is a good example of a Christian movie done right. It doesn't force verses or Christian ideas unto those who watch it. Rather, it's designed to entertain, but has a Christian message at it's core:

I like a lot of Christian music...I know a lot of it isn't much different from any other music, but I do like that it's clean and has good messages.

I don't know about Christian movies, though. We had to watch part of a movie in Sunday school one time that I think was supposed to be a Christian movie, but it was full of swearing and I didn't notice anything particularly Christian about it, so I didn't like it. That's the only one I remember seeing.

If you look at secular movies made on the same budgets and skills as many christian movies it makes a bit more sense.
I have seen some good and well made (probably still low budget) Christian movies. I don't think it is the "preaching" or not "preaching" in a film that makes it better or worse. In any movie.. if you can't believe their acting or what they are saying, etc.. it's going to be bad.

As far as Christian music goes. There is good Christian music. You just have to be selective to find it. What they play on the radio is often just copies of other music.. but I think I could say the same for a lot of secular pop as well.

@Multifavs that doesn't really sound like a Christian movie. It was probably a secular one... possibly with a Christian sounding title or theme in it?

You're right. Since the title of the movie was something about God and we watched it in Sunday school, I just guessed that it was a Christian movie. But maybe I'm wrong because it really didn't seem like one.

Christian movies seem to be all about the message rather than telling a good story.

If so many of the Christian-themed movies out there did not make us sound like we have a persecution complex and look at all unbelievers as a dangerous enemy until we have converted them, the message would be fine in my opinion, even if not necessarily worked in subtly. Although yes, that would probably be better, and any atheists seeing these movies might be inclined to hear more about the Gospel, and not constantly wonder if all Christians think that they are out to get them.

Funny I found this song on youtube on accident while Christian music and movies were on my mind and I was listening to a recent recording of hawk nelson. I never heard of this musician but I clicked on it out of curiosity. The introduction before the song gave me chills. The point he made is pretty tough and hard to learn until you go through something where you have to learn it.

reminded me of this song that God sang to a discouraged and suicidal man named Joe King, if you want to skip to the song it starts at 3:16, when i first heard it brought me to tears

To be honest, good acting or not, I'm far more inclined to watch a secular movie/show that portrays or revolves around characters and storylines that are about morality, general ethics, excellent principles and human character/integrity, all of which, if analyzed, can go back to the roots of Christianity anyway. For example:

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

This movie moves me more in the spiritual/Christian sense than any other 'Christian' film I have seen.

It's funny how my mood changes every so often. Like last week I was feeling worried and fearful a lot, but for the last few days for the most part I feel much happier.
