  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's on your mind?

Just please don't let it be Strike on Christmas, Dear Santa, Love Actually, or Christmas With a Capital C. ^_^
No worries, I loathe Love Actually and Strike on Christmas, haha. I am not sure if I have seen the other two, but they don’t sound promising. I typically watch It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th Street and The Bells of St. Mary’s every year. Normally I watch It’s a Wonderful Life every Christmas Eve, but this year my sister and I changed it up and watched Meet Me in St. Louis instead. I highly recommend The Bells of St. Mary’s ( if anyone hasn’t seen it ). Personally, I think it is the better Bing Crosby Christmas movie. I was never a huge fan of White Christmas

Adobe Flash Player has found a new way to be annoying.

For a little while now, whenever I play an online game that uses Flash, I have to right-click and hit "Show All" or else the whole picture disappears making the game unplayable. And hitting Show All often makes the game either smaller so it's harder to see, or bigger so part of it is cut off. There are even a few games where that doesn't even work so I can't play them.
I used to have Flash Player lag and/or crash a lot, but not as often now so it's doing this instead. o_O

Nobody with a car note or a mortgage is ever truly "free" unfortunately.

I guess it depends on how you define the word “free.” Debt-free, certainly not, but if this is a reference to “the borrower is slave to the lender,” that’s talking about freedom in a rather specific sense.

Also, I would argue that a mortgage is the only type of debt that has the potential to be a blessing. Having your own house, given that the payment is well within your means, can be a huge blessing, and in some cases it is more financially favorable than renting.

I agree. When I had a credit score done a few years ago when I was applying for a mortgage, it was explained to me that certain kinds of debt are not considered a liability and this “debt”can actually work in your favor. A mortgage isn’t considered a negative debt. It’s actually more of an investment. A house you are paying off is an asset as opposed to monthly rent which is just an expense.

What also helps is if you have a record of borrowing small amounts of money and paying it off in a timely manner. That shows lenders that you are reliable with repayment. They also look to see credit card history. Contrary to what people fear, credit cards are not a gateway to debt ( when used responsibly)
I was told that having a few credit cards that you used regularly and paid off balances timely really bumps up your score. You actually need to borrow small amounts of money and pay it off for at least a year or two before applying for a mortgage

Yeah, I mean it is possible to get a mortgage without a credit score. You just have to find a lender who does what is called "manual underwriting." Credit cards can definitely be useful to those who know how to be responsible with them. That is a big IF for a lot of people though lol. To me the most useful credit cards are the ones that you can use to travel after you have racked up so many points/miles.

Agreed. I totally understand someone not wanting to use credit cards, and I especially don't look down on anyone who has had serious spending problems in the past and don't want the temptation of a credit card. However, building a good credit history is extremely helpful. I've been building credit since I was a teen and I've been bound and determined to keep it excellent.

I was actually talking about being free from work which the post I quoted implied. Nothing more. From what I remember he just got a new car.

If you do not have a note, you can go without working and lose nothing (not saying it would be ideal, having to scrounge food, living out of wherever..etc but ultimately you lose nothing by not working when you don't owe anybody anything)

Was simply pointing out that sadly when you owe people, that freedom is short lived.

And I decided to remark more or less because your comment was kind of rude/outside the range of what is your business.

Agreed it IS none of my business, but considering that it was a public forum he made it open for everyone to comment........you assume rudeness where none was intended, but if it makes you feel better. Kudos.

No worries, I loathe Love Actually and Strike on Christmas, haha.

Then ... please marry me, Yankee Girl. From this alone, I can tell ours was a match foretold in the heavens before creation. ^-^

(I seriously ... seriously loathed Love Actually, for so many reasons ....)

Except your comment wasn’t even related to what he said. You took it from a simple comment about being excited for some freedom from work (not all that different from a post you just made) and turned it into a judgmental commentary on financial decisions you believe he has made. His financial decisions are not your business, and yeah, was just a very odd and out-of-place thing to say.

True, but I am fortunate to have neither right now. Although I will again in due time, no doubt. Part of being an adult.

And it turns out, I am already free. They cut me out of tomorrow (one of the frustrations everyone had with that place was the schedule constantly changing on a dime; not a single week in the past several months went by without finding yourself suddenly working an extra day or getting out, and apparently the schedule change decided to follow me right on out the building for the last time today :/ ), so today did in fact already end up being my last.

I made the best of it and tried to make something of an epic goodbye, considering. I deliberately switched positions with someone else for today in the lab from taking care of bottle lines to the syrups instead, just to mic it up before I left, and I did well considering not being in that area ever since I switched from second shift to first shift last May (because for some reason on first shift they just sort of went with the most elderly person in the group, Rose, stay in analyzing the syrups all week every week; so she was pretty bored by now and was more than happy just to do something else for a change today). Yeah, what a troublemaker I am, right? ^-^ ... And then I called everyone in the plant over the radio to say goodbye, that this was my last day and (despite all the bad times I and most others have had there) it was a pleasure working with them all. And five or six people actually took the time to respond back over the radio with well-wishes and that I would be missed. There was even a Godspeed or two thrown in. .... True, I was not able to see my favorite coworker, the lovely Marina, after all because of the way the scheduling went all week (and I would have tomorrow at least, had the schedule not changed for me), but, I did call her as I was on my way out, while she was still on her way in from home, and we exchanged pleasantries. We shall eventually find a time to hang out later in person before I love away from Houston entirely. So, overall, still a nice way to end the day. ^_^

That's the case here. I refuse to rent because a) it's going to be 50-100% what I'd pay a month for my own mortgage payment, b) I'm literally paying someone else's mortgage at that point and c) because rent prices are so high it's incredibly difficult to get out of that 'system' once you're in it because prohibitively high rent means you're saving next to nothing each month towards your own down payment.

The main issue is that it's difficult to get a reasonably-sized mortgage if you're single and earning less than $40,000-50,000, so it boils down to how much down payment you can put together with the mortgage you can get.

If it's a couple then it isn't so bad.
