I guess we'd have to analyze a Seinfeld episode together to see, lol. Not sure what else to say here..
I would disagree, a lot of it has to do with a well written script. And good directing. Part of being a director is finding good actors, which for the most part he does a good marvelous at. There are so many directors who have given otherwise decent actors poor performances.
There are good scripts that do not exactly flow naturally. I'm talking about realistic human interaction. He knows how to jab subtle emotional and verbal cues to his writing.
That's what I mainly enjoy about his films, are the characters and how they interact with one another. Everything else (and even the story) is secondary to me. His films can also be quite funny.
Scripts are guidelines, all you have to do is look at films that are well known to be ad libed (Such as Joe Pesci in Goodfellas) one of the most memorable lines in that movie was an effect of ad libing.
Yes, SOME part does rest on the film maker, HOWEVER, most of it falls on the actor. Look at the budget he has, he can hire good actors that know how to make dialogue flow, MONEY is what makes his cast, not his directing skill. He is an amateur film maker talent wise (as I said before) that just got lucky.
If those actors gave poor performances, thats again, on the actors themselves. Film makers can only do so much. If an actor isn't into the roll, you will get garbage every time.
If the actor is FEELING IT then even with average directing/script it will work.
I have seen nothing in a QT film that says he carried it. You have talented actors, mediocre can work.
Even giving characters humanity and human emotion is on the actor. If QT were stuck with Keanu Reeves style actors that cant convey emotion to save their lives...... his movies wouldn't be what they are considered by some to be.
