  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's on your mind?

I'm looking forward to those library used book sales

I love those. There's an Amazon seller that sells a lot of library editions from University libraries. Great place to pick up CHEAP books. They only charge shipping.

I bought probably €5000 worth of books for €50 last year lol.

Right? I was able to acquire quite a bit of Medieval literature at the one I went to in the spring. Special highlights were C. S. Lewis' treatise on courtly love, The Allegory of Love and his preface to Paradise Lost. But identifying my favourites from that sale is as hard as identifying my favourite book... I found so many excellent titles.

What is the name of this seller?! Are they on Amazon.co.uk exclusively, or do they have a store on Amazon.com, too?

That's cool :)

I'm not sure whether they operate beyond .co.uk or not, but one is awesome_books_001 and the other is betterbooksworldltd.

I just checked again and they aren't all a penny, but a good amount are.

It looks like they're only on .uk. My heart is sad; my pocket book rejoices.

Really, though, that's a great resource. Amazon is a great place to find some remarkable bargains if you can exploit the search engine to its full potential, have the patience to sift through pages of results, and watch prices fluctuate.

Starbucks. It's funny, I never liked Starbucks so much, before I came to Japan. They have such nice things, on their menu here. Expensive, yes, for sure, but nice. They play great music, in English. It's so nice, to be able to always understand what the songs are saying. I get songs, stuck in my head, all the time. It's more annoying, when the songs are in a language I don't speak fully.

Absolutely.

I seldom bought used books, but when the alternative is paying £100 for a 90-page reference book new when I can get it used for £0.01-1, I will probably buy it used.

If it is, however, a book I'll want to keep in my library forever, I'd probably buy it new.

I had a nice Stephen King collection I lost several years ago. I found I can get them all on Amazon from third-party dealers for a penny! It's $3.99 for the shipping though, which isn't bad.

You are sooooooo lucky. I wish I could be in Japan..... Id have to visit every parts location I could for the rarest of parts for my car. If I couldn't find those parts, Id just buy an authentic sword and call it a day and see the sights.

I've had pretty good luck buying used. Just keep in mind....

Acceptable: Don't waste your time.
Good: Don't waste your time since it's probably Acceptable.
Very Good: Good
Like New: Very Good
New: Like New

Always go hardcover unless paperback is dramatically cheaper. A Good hardcover trumps a Very Good paperback, and so on. Dust jackets are preferable. Ex libris is a mixed bag; sometimes they have a stout library binding, sometimes their dust jacket has a mylar sleeve. Sometimes they have minimal wear, sometimes the ear is heavy. In nearly every case, they have markings.

Several times I've received a book that wasn't true to Amazon's condition guidelines, and in almost every case, I've received a full refund.

Really, in the five or so years I've been buying books for my library, I've only bought one or two that aren't in suitable shape for a personal library.

But, you know, if you're serious about library, archive-quality books, Easton Press is the last word, but you pay for them, oh, you pay for them.

I ate way too much cheesecake today! Thankfully, it was egg free cheesecake made with cornstarch and blackberries and kisses.

Have you ever been in a lopsided relationship where you're more attached to the other person than they are to you? That's where we are, I think...

Speaking of personal library - have you been able to organize it yet? :)

Mine is mostly organized - except the books I pulled off shelves and never put back and anything new I've acquired in the past year.

Is it possible to eat too much cheesecake?

Yes. If your tummy hurts, you've had too much.

I don't think so,My auntie kelly makes the best mini cheesecakes and
I could eat half a dozen.

These were mini cheesecakes. We made them in cupcake tins and used blonde Oreos for the crusts. I think I ate 5 lol
