  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Not sure about that, lol. What are you saying? That he was the last real innovator?
I think so. Well, then there wouldn't be the Foo Fighters. There's been some innovation, but music today is done by computers and fast beats. Hardly impressive.

Think you're forgetting about a lot of the less than mainstream music too.

Kind of like how movies today are no longer innovative because they use CGI instead of traditional special effects like makeup, puppetry, and doing dangerous stunts.

Not sure about that.. think CG has allowed movies to be made that wasn't possible prior. I agree films are stale, I just think that's due to only having so many stories one can tell.

After thousands of years of story telling and over a century of cinema, we were bound to run out of fresh ideas sooner or later. Heck, my parent's, grandparent's, and great grandparent's days had all the best ideas. Our day just has all the best special effects.

Stories are stale because they lean more on CGI and special effects than an actual story and plot. I mean, there's some plot, but they hope to wow us with graphics that they hope people forget about the boring, predictable plot and that cringeworthy kiss right in the middle of a disaster as if that really matters.

The state of the music industry today leaves me in tears.

As much as I loved James Cameron's Avatar, I have to admit that the amazing visuals and action making up for the poor plot can also be said about pornography. I'm actually a little concerned that when the sequels finally come out, the novelty of the special effects won't be there and won't be anywhere near as successful as the first one.

I wonder if there's anyone else who prefers 2D animation in movies over 3D. Honestly, while 3D modeling does sound cool, there's something I really like about illustrated animation. Especially from the 90's and early 2000's.
That's why I'm a little sad to see that 2D animation seems to be dying out.

It has already died out. The early 2000's was when it was declared that traditional animation in theaters was dead. Disney released a traditionally animated film called The Princess and the Frog in 2009 and they even acknowledged it was a huge risk for that reason alone.

I guess today's generation of kids watching animated films and TV series from our day would be like us watching Saturday morning cartoons from the 1970's.

Speaking of animation, I hate how most modern cartoons on television are done in flash. Makes them look incredibly cheap like card board cut outs.

It's much more efficient than doing it traditionally. According to voice actor Mel Blanc, back during the Golden Age of American cartoons it took a team of 125 animator 9 months to create a 7 minute cartoon. With Flash, you could do that with a single animator in less amount of time.

Aw. :( I never heard about that somehow. At least there are still some cartoons and anime in 2D, though I don't watch TV much now anyway.
Maybe I prefer 2D because that is what I would do myself, since I have no experience with 3D modeling (though I'd love to try it).

I guess the reason I don't watch TV anymore is because there's nothing I'm interested in. Everything I do like either I got tired of it, I saw every episode, or it's not on anymore. Pretty much all the new adult shows are obscene and the cartoons are not interesting to me, plus none of them are related to my favorite characters. :p

I know there have been some cartoons where the art style was certainly not the greatest and could have been way better. My dad often has said that I could do better than the official art.

Yeah of course. Just sad that it degrades the quality so much.

Although depends on the show too.. South Park is still alright with it ironically.. even though the style of that show was intentionally done to look cheap.

Disney released Treasure Planet in 2002. It was a commercial failure and Disney did not attempt another theatrically released 2D animation movie until 2009.

DreamWorks released Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas in 2003 and it was also a commercial failure. It nearly bankrupted the company and thus they abandoned traditional animation in favor for CGI.

Famed animator Don Bluth released Titan AE in 2000 and it also became such a commercial failure that it really did bankrupt his film production company.

It's really sad to see something we grew up with go the way of the dodo but as time marches on, some opportunities die out making way for other opportunities to take their place.

Actually the pilot episode of South Park was done through stop motion using cardboard paper so it really was cheaply made. South Park was originally created as a college project by Matt Stone and Trey Parker before they decided they want to make a TV show out of it. After the show got the green light to go on air, they then used a piece of software called Autodesk Maya to create each episode. The animation style was so simple that they could create an entire episode in a single day.

I know. Just commentating that flash animation works for some shows at least.
