  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I love spiders. I was going to buy a Chilean Rose a while ago, but my boss wouldn't allow me to have it in the house. (He pays the rent on my house, so has a lot of say, understandably)

He quite openly admitted to being terrified of spiders, and had visions of it escaping onto the farm. As if I'd let that happen anyway...

This is something I've never honestly done. My biological clock won't allow it. However, I do actually have dreams like this one... -.-

OMM: Mission opportunities at my church!! I am so excited to see and hear what the Lord has been putting on the hearts of others in my church and how that lines up with what he has been saying to me and doing in my life. I cannot wait to see what the Lord will do!!! I am also excited and blessed to know that the Lord is going to use me and that I get to be a part of what he's doing.

So I recently found out that the thrift store job I used to work at for six years was happy to see me gone. One even did a happy dance in front of the customers and told them that she was happy that I was quitting. I quit because my co-workers treated me like a liability and they started looking for reasons to fire me. One of them being for wearing a Christian t-shirt even though they sold Bibles and angel products.

I must be that frickin worthless, huh?

That's awesome! So happy for you and your church. I just love it when God does awesome things like that in our lives.

I've never been on a mission trip before, but would love to. Everyone says it's the best thing they've done and I'd love to be a part of that.

They're living contrary to what they believe in (if they even do believe in God). That is most of the world, but don't let that bother you God said this would happen, even in His time that He walked the earth.

They don't believe in God. Religious items are just another dime in their pocket.

And it's especially frustrating when on the spectrum. I know a good number of you had normal lives because of God's grace not to give you any mental health issues. God was not so gracious to me. I have to work twice as hard for half the things you all take for granted and people still tell me I need to try harder because my best is not good enough.

At this point in my life, if God truly loved me He would just kill me and end my suffering. I'm tired of living in constant shame and dehumanization just because I lost the genetic lottery.

YES!!!!! DO IT! You will NEVER be the same! Sorry, that is a lot of caps. I am just really excited and fired up. Seriously, I've been on a few mission trips and God often uses them to leave a mark on you. Often what happens is it pushes you and encourages you not only to trust in God but also to go out and get more involved.

We all have our struggles, some more so than others. God is certainly Gracious to everyone. Why? Because Jesus is the light of this world and He is sharing His light through every one of those who believe in Him. No matter what we struggle with. Paul, he is a very good example of what you have said. He wanted God to take away his weaknesses but God said He would strengthen him from those weaknesses instead. God's Grace is sufficient enough. 2 Corinthians 12:5-10

Please understand that I say this to be uplifting, I am truly sorry you're going through hardship, but know God is with you, and us too!

I would like to do this someday too. I have never been either. Can I ask where you have gone for these missions?

This is exactly what I hear from people who've been. I really want to experience that even more now. I just need to find a church that's big enough to fund a trip.

Just curious, would it be possible for me to join a trip with a church that I'm not a member of?

I've been international and stateside. I did everything from helping with food distribution to people living in abject poverty to ethnographic research.

I get really excited about mission work, those are my degrees after all. I was trained and studied for the mission field. Mission work doesn't have to be international, it can be in your own community, area, state, etc.

This is one of the reasons it is important to be a part of a church. We need one another, we can't accomplish the work set before us on our own. A lot of mission work happens through the church. Those organizations that operate outside of the church usually will not "take" someone who is not a member of a local body either. All of the mission organizations I have had dealings with or know of you have to provide a letter of reference from your pastor among other things.

Your church doesn't have to be huge to go do mission work. I've known of small churches doing mission trips both state side and international. There are also organizations that would be willing to allow you to work with them as long as you raised the funding and you are a faithful member of a church. You usually have to provide a reference and go through an interview process. Some churches will allow you to go with them if you are not a member of their church, if your pastor will vouch for you.

I have done a mission trip to Mexico in 2009, during Spring break in high school. I even got pictures to prove it

This little boy right here was selling gum for a peso each. I was buying some when a classmate took this picture. Child labor is very common in the markets because children have a better chance of selling things than adults. I had children hand me things hoping I would buy them.

This is my mother with a little girl who was very proud of the fact that she went to school. My mother pointed to me and told her, "You see him? That's my son!" and the little girl asked, "Does he go to school?" My mother also tried to explain to her what snow was.

A picture of me with a Mexican resident. Normally people say I'm good with children but this doesn't seem to be the case.

The slums. I walked into a slum house where it was one giant room with dirt floors, chickens running around and their bathroom was a toilet with a tarp surrounding it.

They had things like small TV's and radios because in Mexico, half their electricity is free in order to spread propaganda from their politicians. A Mexican college professor told me this.

We helped repair a house by mixing cement to create concrete floors and added some metal slates for their roof tops. We repaired only one house and the rest of the mission trip was lecture after lecture.

Oh wow! That's awesome! Yeah, I have been really thinking about, or has been on my heart, for a while about helping the community, those in poverty, in need, etc. My only issue is at the moment money to get to these places. They're quite far so walking is out of the question. I'm just not sure where He wants me to be, or how to get there.

I get the importance of a church.. I really do. But it also has to be the right church. I can't just go to any church if I am in strong disagreement to their doctrine (not lining up with God's Word). That's the battle I'm currently facing.

Ah, okay. That sounds somewhat complicated. Good to know, though.
