What's manly and what's girly?

I read the "A man should be allowed to..." thread and it seems like the view on what's manly vs girly is a bit different in the states.(Seems like...I'm not saying it is) So I just got curious. What is manly and what is girly. In your opinion?

Manly: Being a Gentleman. Hunting. Fishing. Camping. Guns. Fighting. Trucks. Working Out (lifting weights and that sort). Having Dogs. Cowboy Boots. Workin with your hands. Helpin people out when they need it. Not asking for help from the Govt. Standing up for yourself/family and possessions. Understanding the need for force and the proper time to use it.

Womanly: I dunno, im not a woman. But I would say probably acting like a Lady. The rest of it will fall into place if she does that.

Yea, wrong on both accounts.

Guns are Immoral? You must not like Freedom and hte preservation of that Freedom. Also, Hunters are better conservationists than enviromentalists, mostly because they want hte outdoors to stay the outdoors, and Hunting thins the herds, thats why the DNR people hire snipers to kill deer when there are no hunters.

I think a good book for men to read concerning the issue is called Man of Steel and Velvet. Very good book.

When I think of the concepts of masculine and femine I have some rather clear images come to mind.

Masculine: Heavy duty physical labor, outdoor endeavors (hunting, fishing, landscaping, ect..) Protecting friends / family, showing little emotion, treating women with the respect and honor they deserve.

Femine: Nurturing, caring, less hefty physical labor (save childbirth), expressive in emotions, more "clean" outdoor or sheltered outdoor activities.

Though there are clearly exceptions to these stereotypes, this is what the media seems to have associated in my mind with feminity and masculnity.

This seems to be getting a bit off topic into a discussion on the ethics of hunting with firearms (guns). Clearly, the man (Jacob) sees no problem with hunting and the woman (Ozma) doesn't like it. Done.

Let's get back to what is percieved as manly or womanly.

I think gender roles are determined by social standards and that there is nothing that is "manly" or "girly" in and of themselves.

And your idea that society can function without guns only works if there are no criminals. But just incase you have missed the last 6000 Years of Human history, Criminals will always be around.

If people did not hunt deer where I live, then there would be a lot more accidents on the road and people dead from these collisions. Sometimes, hunting is needed.

Backwards? How am I backwards? I work for one of hte leading Medical Supply Companies in the World, I can fix a good number of problems on complex Mammogram machines, I can build a computer, build an Engine Motor, work 40 hours a work while taking 15 hours of classes and still maintain a 3.5 GPA. Dont let your prejudice against hunters and gun owners make you look dumb.

Ozma and Jacob, please try to stick to the topic of the thread... talking about gender roles, what is "manly" or "girly".... if you're going to continue this petty argument please do it elsewhere. In any sense the argument is not productive to the body of Christ and I doubt that either of you is going to change the other's mind... so who is going to be the bigger person and just let it go?

I guess society has created general norms for each gender...from past behaviour

I would rather look at it individually...each person to his own...unique and special....that being said...i am not into cooking or sewing
