  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

well... here is my humble opinion.

TV is okay to watch-- just avoid things that lower your standards, and don't wither away while sitting in front of it because that's kinda dumb ;) I NEVER watch the christian network. Never. as to mtv, i don't know, i haven't seen it, i don't have it... but if you feel "yucky" while watching it that is usually an indication you shouldn't watch it...

clubs-- I am thinking cant there be something better to do with your time? are we talking about the same kind of clubs here-- you go there for three things 1. drink 2. dance while slightly tipsy 3. hit on members of opposite sex
does this seem like something christians should invest time into?

drinking-- i choose not to drink. i have never been drunk but i have seen tons of drunk people and they act dumb. :p however, i think that drinking some is not a sin, just be smart about it. if you are in doubt, give it up for a year and come back to it when you are older and wiser. if you are under 21, you should NOT be drinking.

are you a new christian?

In answer to your questions, I don't watch a lot of television that is violent or has sex scenes.

Usually I turn it off if I start to really feel yuck. There is so much garbage on the telly.

About clubbing, yes I used to go a lot. My husband didn't like me going and also I didn't really like it that much either, so have stopped going. It feels strange, but there are better things to do with your time. I'm sure there are other Christians your age who you can get together with and do other fun stuff.

Drinking, well, not too much. Been drunk once, that was enough. I usually only drink for special occasions. Such as a glass of wine at a wedding, or other special function.

As for drinking under 21. In Australia the legal age is 18.

You really need to be very careful about what you expose yourself (your mind and your body) to. Some of the things you mentioned may not be sinful on the surface, but they open the door to many temptations...If you continue to place yourself in those environments, you will fall eventually. The Bible says that if we are saved (i.e. Jesus is our saviour), that our Spirit is brand new, but that our minds have to be renewed and our bodies and the desires thereof have to be controlled. If you are feeling convicted about these things, perhaps there's a reason. Is the Holy Spirit trying to tell you something?...

Peace and love,
blitzn

I noticed that after I had rededicated my life to the Lord that my tastes actually CHANGED as to what I enjoyed reading, watching, doing. I no longer enjoyed many of the things I used to either enjoy or not mind. For example, many of the shows on tv suddenly became very offensive. I once told an off color joke (used to be my stock in trade) just to see if this held true there too. It sure did. I felt so grubby that I have never told another one since. I guess the bottom line is this- if you are sensing discomfort over what you are watching, etc... then perhaps it's time to turn it off. Another good guideline would be to ask yourself, "Would I be embarrassed if Jesus walked in and found me doing this? And, would I feel comfortable inviting Him to join me?"

Some things aren't really clear about whether or not they are really okay to do...but I feel that is why we have a conscience, and the Bible tells us to act in a way so that we have a clear conscience. If you feel guilty about doing something...don't do it! And don't be afraid to change your mind about something you used to think is okay. God should always be working in our lives, and in doing so he might convict us to change our behavior.

It all makes since to what you all are saying. The whole club scene was my "thing" when I was in the world and the reasons that Ceres said about the club are true the only difference is that I dont get drunk, im married and if I were to go it was be for fun with me and my husband to go out dancing... I dont see anything wrong the club scene I guess. just that my views on why I go have changed. I sometimes still watch the sames shows I used to but if something becomes offensive then of course I would change it. So really I guess it comes down to a comfort thing?!

I have seen it in a different light as a Christian (clubbing etc.)

Generally, clubbing has a connotation of lots of partying, drinking, smoking, general gluttony ;) While you may just be going to go dancing and listen to music and be with friends, and not drinking in excess (gluttony) and smoking, etc., it still gives the perception of evil.

While it does state in verses like John 7:24 and Gal. 2:6 to not judge based on appearance, God also does command us to not give the appearance of evil (1 Thess 5:22).

It's more of an issue of perceptions to those who know you or don't know you and you are holding yourself out to be Christian. I.E. if someone ever says, "I saw so and so at the clubs the other night and he/she is supposed to be Christian." I know it's happened before with me specifically. It's a perception.

We just have to be careful not to give the perception that we're there to drink/smoke etc., but to just have fun and dance/listen to music.

"Would I be embarrassed if Jesus walked in and found me doing this? And, would I feel comfortable inviting Him to join me?"

That really struck me~ and thats what helped us to filter out things that werent working in our marriage.

Would Jesus sit down and watch MTV with us? Or go to the bar- and drink etc??

Once we realized that we wanted to live a life where everything we do will bring God Glory- It made sense what we needed to change... although the change was hard, it was SO worth it!! And has changed us so much.

Just my .02 :)

sheesh I used changed alot :sorry:

Hmm... I've read what some of you have said, and you seem to be worried about going places or doing stuff which might lead you to sin. Wake up and smell the coffee! Didn't Jesus hang out with sinners? Prostitutes and tax-collectors, the Jews said.

Undoubtedly, getting wrecked every weekend is out of order and I can say that 'cos I don't do it (anymore)

If something can be used or enjoyed wholesomely, why should we let the world hijack it? Is dancing inherently evil, or have the Church Police decided it's sex standing up? Is alcohol inherently evil or have the Church Police taught that alcohol leads to alcoholism, alcoholism is a lack of self-control, self-control is a sin, sin leads to death... therefore if you have a drink, you're going to die?

Truiz - is your heart right when you do these things? Then I think it's ok. Me, I like a glass or two of red wine with dinner, maybe even a cocktail! Others would be convinced this is a sin. Same with dancing.

In this instance, I'd do what I wanted, but I wouldn't necessarily shove it in a 'weaker' person's face.

The UK drinking-age is 18 too... although my (American) wife tells me that in the US... is it Mormons? are allowed to drink under-21 in their own homes, because of something they believe. Is that right?
