  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What would you think if a Christian sci-fi movie were made?

Parables were stories containing a moral/theological lessons. If this is what you want a 'christian' sci-fi film to do then there are already films out there which do this. They're maybe not as 'christian' as you want but theye exist none-the-less.

why are you judging me and assuming how 'christian' i want a movie to be?

Well what do you want from a 'christian' sci-fi film?

answering a question with a question is normally a valid way to teach however the 2nd question needs to relate. since this question doesn't relate to the assumption you made of me so please answer me directly or ask a more related question to clarify.

This was brought up in the Spiderman thread, you can watch any movie you want and put any spin you'd like on it. I would say 2001 is a Christian Sci-Fi film, to me it deals with man's constant search for something bigger;GOD. I prefer to look at films this way, if you walk away with any kind of enlightenment they creators of that film have done their job and used their GOD given gift. Why does everything have to come in a pretty wrapped up box with a giant stamp of approval from the Christian Movie Board?

I'm asuming you want a 'christian' sci-fi film to carry an explicit christian message. Is this correct?

Or why we're at it you can look at previous attempts in other genres:

Maybe a Christian horor film would tide you over?

Lord, forgive me, but that's funny. Talk about bad Christian movies:D Although I must admit, there is a part of me that would like to see it, just once.

well i reckon that's what you get for assuming ;)

do you mean 'explicit' like the parables Jesus had to explain to the disciples because most of the time they just didn't get it? :D

i'm agreeing with KenobiKid and adding that a lot of stories (be they movies, books, what have you) are loved by many because something in them resonates with pieces of the greatest story ever told - even when those pieces are submerged under the goop of other religions/philosophies/heresies ie the first Matrix. (for those that hated the matrix feel free to re-read the words 'by many' :) ) Spider-Man never mentions God (aside from Aunt May saying 'thanks' to the statue of Mary) yet the whole concept of superhero can be explained by Jesus, or by humanism, depending on your viewpoint. i'll maintain however that Jesus answers the questions better.

The Inherent problem with Christian media is that the ulterior message of the gospel weighs down any credibility the film has. Usually secular and non-Christians are wholly turned off by films such as Omega Code, Left Behind, etc...

I am completely turned off by Christian media and how it markets itself only to Christians. So many Christians refuse to see or hear what non-Chrisians have to say in their art and then stupid films by Christians are made and they expect the world to watch it and be saved. We're such takers and rarely givers.

I don't like the idea of a Christian film, I like the idea of a 'GOOD' film. If the two can marry than great but more often then not Christian films fail to take themselves seriously.

I've always thought that the chapter in ACTS, called "Shipwrecked" detailing Paul's adventure as a captive on the high seas would make for an incredible film. The story is good enough without putting a Christian spin on it. Christian arts for the most part has equaled mediocrity these days and, well, thanks but no thanks.

You have to remember also, and this is not meant to offend anyone, that Christians as a whole are extremely marketable. You can throw a stamp on anything and put it in a Christian bookstore and sell a million copies of it. That's just the way it is, plain and simple. That's why the Left Behind movies have made so much money on home video, when those came out you could walk into any Christian bookstore and be blasted upon entrance of the store with giant displays with a million copies of the DVD/VHS.

Some people need to have that stamp to avoid whatever it is that keeps them from watching/listening to "Secular" movies/music. This comes back to some many threads in the past few months, like the one about editing movies. Clean and safe doesn't make it good. Let's face it, the world isn't in the best position at the moment, hiding behind G rated movies isn't helping the situation either. I'd rather watch Saving Private Ryan or Full Metal Jacket and see people getting blown up, shot, killed etc etc. and have that knowledge that yeah this is what happens in war. The biggest problem with people today is that they want to be sheltered and forget that things like this go on. Just like the uproar with the violence in The Passion of The Christ, yes it was brutal but was it accurate? I think so, if you're going to base your life on what Christ did and suffered through, for you, then know it. I'm getting off of this high horse because I can't even collect my thoughts on this subject long enough to type without going off course.

Right On KenobiKid. I suspect you are not a kid.

On the subject of sci-fi, being a HUGE sci-fan myself [and a filmmaker] I'm sorry to say that there hasn't been a great sci-fi made in a long time. I can't remember when, maybe ALIEN3. Whereabouts are you from KenobiKid?

J.M. Prater
No I'm not a kid, haha. But I do still collect action figures, so I guess there's still some kid there.

Yes Alien 3 was a masterpiece, even with the cut down version that was release originaly. David Fincher is the man, plain and simple. Have you seen his cut on the Quadrilogy? It clears up tons of stuff that is just kind of left hanging in the open from the original cut. But no, I really can't think of any good "true" Sci-Fi films in the past few years. But Sci-Fi is kind of like the stepchild of film genres anyways. It's kind of hard to label Sci-Fi anyways, you have so many sub-genres in there, Action/Fantasy blah blah blah. If you want to strip away all the junk, I would say the Matrix trilogy is the best Sci-Fi to come out since Alien3. We need a Sci-Fi thread really.

I'm hanging out in good old Indiana, where nothing goes on. What about you?

Am I reading this right? Alien 3 is a masterpiece?! David Fincher has done waaaaay better stuff than Alien 3. Alien and Aliens are masterpieces, Alien 3 I am much less sure of.

Yeah Fincher has done way better stuff, but for being his first directing job, Alien 3 is a masterpiece, IMO. I think he captured the mood just right, where the previous 2 had failed, not to dig on Scott or Cameron. He was spot on with the character development with Ripley, just was always so A to B in the first two films. My use of masterpiece may have just come from the complete hate for part 3 in most parts of the world. Like I said in my opinion it is, not Gospel, just a fanboys opinion.;)
