  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

what would you do on CBS's "survivor"?

something i thought about while watching "survivor" tonight.

let's say you made it on the show. i know i'd love to be on. but, part of the "game" is lying, being "fake", etc. to win the game - all on national tv. so my first thought would be "how would a christian even be able to be on this show in good conscious"?

but something else struck me: it's a game! have you ever played one of those murder-mysteries? like, if you played monopoly, and someone landed on your boardwalk with 2 hotels: you could be mean and make them go "bankrupt". i wouldn't do this in real life, but in the context of a game...

i don't know what i think. how about ya'll?

Mandi,

Believe it or not, I've thought about this while watching the show. If I had any desire to be on the show, I think I would make it a goal to be an honest person. I would strive to not let the game change me into someone I don't want to be. I think that people would have much more respect for a person that made it clear where they stand on the lying, back stabbing, etc.

Did you watch Big Brother 3 (I think it was 3, maybe 4)? Jason was a vocal Christian on that show. He made it clear from the start that he was not going to lie and cheat to get ahead. He stuck to that. As a viewer, I respected him and wanted him to win for that reason.

Your comment about playing games such as murder mysteries and such....definitely thought provoking. It does give a different take on things. I still think that saying "I won't vote you off the island" and then doing it is lying...game or not.

Interesting question, Mandi. Thanks! I'm curious to see what others think! ;)

Oops...I forgot to answer your 2nd post. My other concerns are what keeps me from wanting to ever go on that show.

1. I'm a very modest person, and walking around half naked all the time for lack of clothing is not my cup of tea.
2. Bugs....I HATE bugs
3. The possibility of being on the show with a gross naked man like Richard Hatch...not appealing.

Thanks!!

I have watched the show once or twice before when it aired for the very first time.
Theres a high probability that I'd be voted off the island first. My mission: to weird out people. Yeah you'd see me hopping on a rock in a tom green-like behaviour. haha

Thats what bugs, snakes, and tiny little animals are for...eating!
Plus you could make a nice bed out of some palm branches, just be sure to shake the tarantulas out of them first. ;)

If you say that you won't EVER lie, bend the truth or mislead someone, you're chances of winning are very slim. I think Tina is the winner who came the closest to doing so and I don't think she was completely honest the entire time. On the other hand, being an outright liar everytime you get the chance isn't going to win either (see Rob from the Amazon, my favorite player ever besides Colby).

The show last night exemplified the key to winning in my opinion. Be valuable enough AND tolerable enough to make it to the merge, and strong enough and smart enough to win individual challenges after the merge. As much as I hated it, the tribe did the right thing by getting rid of Colby because they know he has all the skills above.

I thought all-star Survivor would be better than it is, but it's apparent that NOBODY GOOD is going to win. The weak players are ganging up on the strong ones and booting them ASAP.

As for being on the show myself, I'm not sure my skin is thick enough to deal with the editing process. I'd be afraid of the way I was being portrayed. Also, if there was a LIVE bug eating challenge, I'd refuse and then be booted for not trying.

If I for some reason found myself on that show, I would try to always be honest. Though I'm not even sure if I wouldn't instantly quit in the first place because I really do not like reality shows. The things networks will do for ratings nowadays...

There is no way I could live like that...I need food, and a bed is pretty nice too! Call me spoiled...I am. :D
lol, nope, can't say I'd argue.....when I saw the title...my first thought was "I'd die" Guess I'm not much of a survivor. LOL ^_^

no, but i saw dirk on the first survivor. seeing his faith in action got me watching the show, and i got hooked.

walking around half naked all the time for lack of clothing is not my cup of tea.

yeah, me too. i'd love to be on the show if there were no cameras and no guys.

I thought all-star Survivor would be better than it is, but it's apparent that NOBODY GOOD is going to win. The weak players are ganging up on the strong ones and booting them ASAP.

totally agree. i think if i was in the jury, i would just vote for who was the best 'survivor'.

If I for some reason found myself on that show, I would try to always be honest.

yeah, one strategy i thought of was, i go in at the beginning of the show and say "look, i'm not gonna tell ANYONE who i'm voting for". that way, you don't have to lie but you don't have to tell your teammate "i'm voting you off"...

I probably wouldn't go on such a show. The direction that reality tv has taken is something that I find completely disgusting and morally wrong. Shows that play with people's emotions, try to get couples to cheat on each other, marry people off for money, etc. are not something that I would want to support or be a part of. Even Survivor showcases lying, cheating, and people running around barely clothed. The only decent show of this type that I've seen was "King of the Jungle" on Animal Planet. I did like that one, but wouldn't be likely to participate as I wouldn't be interested in the prize or be the type of person who could make it onto the show.

I think it's difficult for any Christian to be on reality shows like "Survivor" because they get stereotyped, teased, and as I've seen, are most often not well liked. Also, the Christians they do put on these shows, are ones who claim to be Christians in name only most of the time. It really doesn't make the rest of us look very good! Anyway, I have always said my luxury item would be baking soda---you could use it somehow to brush your teeth, wash out some of your clothes (like undies..hehe), and to even clean your body a bit, by making a paste with it. I'm sure it would have plenty of good uses. Or, if I could also bring my bible, Iwould have that too. I am not sure I'd want to be on such a show, I think I'd be voted off unless I could find some useful skill that everyone needed in order to eat or something!

I definitely wouldn't be on the new show about the girl who has to pick a straight man from a mix of gay and straight bachelors. I think that is really weird and it's just like a makeout fest. I think reality tv is going too far now! What next? Gay couples search for gay love and make out on tv infront of all the families watching ? Ick. I hope they quit while they are ahead.

Rudy and I would probably gang up on the rest of the so-called "Survivors." Both being SF it would give us an edge. Perhaps I would get voted off for reminding people how physically weak they are or my unpleasant habit of openly despising my competition. Honestly, I would never even be allowed to try out for the show. It has nothing to do with actual survival.
