What would Jesus tell you if you met him?

A common question is "if you met God/Jesus, what would you ask him/say to him?"

But think about it the other way. If Jesus was walking the earth today and he was at a bar, and you walked into the bar and sat down next to him, and he bought you a Bud Select, and you guys started talking, what do you think he'd say to you?

(I dont know why I chose the bar image, so dont ask. I guess I just figure Jesus would be at a bar talking to the people there before he went to a church)

I think He would ask me point blank why I put so much focus and attention into a certain area of my life. And I think the question would catch me off guard, and I dont know if I would have an answer. I could come up with real reasons, but the reasons themselves wouldn't be too strong, but at least they'd be honest. Jesus would then go on to tell me, I imagine, that he certainly understands how I feel, but that making it a priority over other things benefits noone, and that there are more important things to worry about and consider. At that point I think I would try to make weak arguements and counterpoints, but Jesus, never getting angry, would calmly address each one. Then as we parted ways, I think he would leave me with some of the most profound wisdom I had ever heard, and I would walk away from the bar a totally different person. I dont know if my feelings would change, but my outlook certainly would.

What would Jesus say to you?

The problem is that, anytime we go outside of scripture to "imagine" what God would say, we're putting our own words and our own expectations on God. That's nothing short of idolitry. It is essentially making God over in your own image.

And, frankly, the idea of Jesus sitting in a bar sucking down beers is blasphemous.

O-o

do you ever let your hair down?
God didn't give us imaginations to do nothing with,..
or do you think imaginations are from Satan?

Jesus in a bar sucking down beers.. well lets look at the biblical facts, he would hang out with the bad crowd, prozzies and tax collectors, and he was always at the wine.. the bar sounds pretty reasonable to me.

as to the Idolitry.. Even God has a sense of humour, he made the Platypus I think he is clever enough to know when us plebs are being silly.

do you ever let your hair down?

Sure, but it has nothing to do with "letting my hair down".

In the Bible, God has given us very specific instructions.

Sometimes, we don't understand why and sometimes they don't make sense to us, but we're still required to follow them.

God didn't give us imaginations to do nothing with,..

He didn't give them to us to make idols out of, either.

do you think imaginations are from Satan?

No. I think that imagination is definitely from God. But that doesn't mean that they can't be used in a way that doesn't honor God.

Jesus in a bar sucking down beers.. well lets look at the biblical facts, he would hang out with the bad crowd, prozzies and tax collectors, and he was always at the wine

And you get this idea, how?

the bar sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Based on what? Do you really think it sounds reasonable for Jesus to violate His own commands?

as to the Idolitry.. Even God has a sense of humour

It , he made the Platypus I think he is clever enough to know when us plebs are being silly.

I'm all for humor and being silly. However, God's word is not a toy and is to be treated reverently, not lightly.

I don't rember any commandment against what if conversations.. did I miss it somewhere?

He didn't give them to us to make idols out of, either.
I don'y see any Idols being made here, I see a light hearted conversational chit chat about a hypothetical meeting with Jesus. (Do you get this stuck up about the What would Jesus Do bracelets?) Also If your worrying about Idolising maybe you'd be better off sulking at the teens discussing who is hottest and the cutest hollywood stars.

No. I think that imagination is definitely from God. But that doesn't mean that they can't be used in a way that doesn't honor God.
I'm sure there is allot of things we could come up with using our noggins that honour God less, than a hypothetical situation.

And you get this idea, how?
because he makes a big deal in the bible about preaching to the unconverted and the whole eating meals with tax collectors zaka somthing or other, and then theres all the prostitutes at the well.. its in there if you read the big book.

Based on what? Do you really think it sounds reasonable for Jesus to violate His own commands?
which Command would he be violating by drinking a beer, He had no trouble making more wine for already plastered wedding guests.

I take nothing seriously, its what gets me through life. apart from cheese, I dont mess around there, cheese is serious business.

No commandment against "what if conversations". There are, however, a number of commandments against idolitry.

You may not see it, but that's what the Bible says it is.

Are you a Christian?

I'm sure there is allot of things we could come up with using our noggins that honour God less, than a hypothetical situation.

Maybe you could, but that doesn't excuse your sin in this case.

because he makes a big deal in the bible about preaching to the unconverted

Fine. Where does Jesus preaching to the uncoverted in the Bible amount to sitting in a bar swilling beer with you?

and the whole eating meals with tax collectors

OK. Jesus ate with tax collectors. Where does the Bible say that He sat in a bar swilling beers?

its in there if you read the big book.

I've been studying "the big book" longer than you've been alive and there's nothing in there that would even remotely suggest that Jesus hangs out in bars drinking beer.

which Command would he be violating by drinking a beer

Obstain from every appearance of evil, don't cause a weaker brother to stumble, don't be drunk with wine, etc.

He had no trouble making more wine for already plastered wedding guests.

And why does the passage say that He did that?

I take nothing seriously, its what gets me through life. apart from cheese, I dont mess around there, cheese is serious business.

Somebody who won't take God's word seriously is somebody who's never encountered the risen Christ.

Where is the Idolising?? how does what ifs make somthing an idol?

Are you a Christian?
mondays to saturdays, sunday I rest.

I don't think Im idolising anyone.. I fail to see any false idols being worshiped right now, where is this sin?

he didnt exactly just shout at the tax collector did he, nope sir'e bob, he joined the man for dinner

OK. Jesus ate with tax collectors. Where does the Bible say that He sat in a bar swilling beers?
see above, pretty much, think of him like action man, or is that worse, either way hes got to be where hes needed otherwise hes not really needed at all, and all your left with is a ken doll.

I've been studying "the big book" longer than you've been alive and there's nothing in there that would even remotely suggest that Jesus hangs out in bars drinking beer.
funny, because he didn't shy away from parties and weddings with drinking involved.

Obstain from every appearance of evil, don't cause a weaker brother to stumble, don't be drunk with wine, etc.
Then why did he make the party goers more wine?? surely he broke his own rule there, and its not even like he did it before they could be slightly pished, no he made wine after theyd already drunk the place dry.

And why does the passage say that He did that?
PARTY!!

Somebody who won't take God's word seriously is somebody who's never encountered the risen Christ.
That or he's just a free spirit that even after finding Christ still likes to express his free will and happy go lucky cockney street urchin way. ^_-

Again, when we put words in God's mouth or ascribe things to Him that He did not say, that's putting our own will and imagination over His word. Thus, an idol.

mondays to saturdays, sunday I rest.

So, if you're not a Christian, why do you have a Christian icon?

I don't think Im idolising anyone.. I fail to see any false idols being worshiped right now, where is this sin?

Addressed this a couple of times already.

he didnt exactly just shout at the tax collector did he, nope sir'e bob, he joined the man for dinner

I see. So, how does Jesus eating with a tax collector equal Jesus sitting in a bar swilling beer?

see above, pretty much, think of him like action man

So then, you don't show God any reverence at all?

funny, because he didn't shy away from parties and weddings with drinking involved.

Show me just one thing in scripture that supports Jesus sitting in a bar drinking beer.

Then why did he make the party goers more wine??

Have you ever even read this passage?

Do you understand why He was there? Do you understand why He made the wine? Do you understand what the wine represented?

Or do you just say, "You know, I've never actually picked up a Bible, myself, but I did hear this story once about Jesus making wine. Therefore, Jesus must be a drunk"?

That or he's just a free spirit that even after finding Christ still likes to express his free will and happy go lucky cockney street urchin way. ^_-

No, I'm sorry but that's just not what the Bible says.

The Bible tells us that when one is born again, He will show reverence for God and for His word, not make a joke out of them.

You're young, I understand. And in this culture (and on this message board), I understand that anybody can say that they're a Christian, whether they are or not, and it's fine.

But the truth is, your mocking God says that you're not born again.

Do you know (or even care) about what the Bible says about those who mock God? Have you ever read Ps 1?
