No, I understood you. If those things happened, would you believe there is a God? That's the question.

So you are asking me if i would believe x exists if i meet x...
Well, yes. Yes, i would believe x exists if i meet x.

Question for the group: If you are an atheist, what would it take to convince you that there truly is "something" rather than "nothing"?

Or is it possible? (I have a feeling that some loathe the concept of God so much, they could watch the seas part & they would STILL find a reason to doubt.....)

Does atheist speak about there being nothing or is it truly just a belief that god or gods does/do not exist.

I always thought it was the latter.

To be an atheist is to lack belief in god/s. When a theist says 'there is a god', the atheist says 'I don't believe you.' An atheist can still believe in any number of things.

All I ask is that all of you please remember theist and atheist are default gnostic positions, while agnosticism is a word specifically created to mean "lack of belief" as opposed to the others.

This is simply not true and it has been addressed on this very forum many times.

(A)gnosticism pertains to knowledge.
(A)theism pertains to belief in personal gods.

They are different answers to different questions and they are not at all mutually exclusive.

Agnosticism is not "some third option" between theism and atheism.

And I ask you to remember that this is not how most of us use these terms.

I'm not trying to sell you anything. The question was not posed to you but why don't you answer it? If that happened, would you believe in God.

Some brands of Christian thought say that their God wouldn't do this. You seem to be implying that your brand of Christian God would. That leaves those of us with no stake in the game in kind of a conundrum. Maybe I just met a god, or maybe it is the devil from someone else's belief system. These supernatural magical beings are kind of tricky to pin down.

That was my fault. I should've worded that better. I thought I was being clear about what I meant by "nothing" but since lots of people have objected, I must have misjudged. My apologies. I didn't mean "nothing" in the literal sense, that "Gee atheists believe that nothing really exists!" but that atheists believe there is nothing (for us) beyond the end of our physical lives, there is nothing that exists in any spiritual realm, there is no Divine Plan or greater morality, etc.

Sorry for not doing a better job.
