What would it mean if Ron Paul won and got his way?

Well if he abolishes Taxes and gets rid of the Federal Reserv the US will go broke in a matter of years(if even that long) crash and burn as a Super Power and probably nation as a whole. I predict the Chinese will take over as Super Power or maybe Putin will put(hehe) his "Unified Russia" plans into action.

So for the avarage american...well you'd be a 3rd world country at worst and a citizen of that. Possibly move to Canada or even Mexico to make a living.

America was fine before the IRS and the Fed. The IRS and the Fed are a big part of the problem. Since their creation our money has lost 99% of its value and have gotten almost 10 trillion dollars in debt.

We would go back to having our money backed by something (like silver and gold). This would stop the inflation and the depreciating dollar value.

John F. Kennedy tried to abolish the Federal Reserve (he even started having the government print the money. They were called 'United States Notes')

Kennedy thought it would be better to have the government print the money than to borrow it from a private entity at interest.

His web site doesn't go into much detail on his positions. He says nothing about Medicare. He wants to make all medical expenses tax deductible. But how will this help anyone if he eliminates income tax? And what will replace income taxes? Forgetting our foreign debt and all our other expenses, the government owes American citizens about $5+ trillion in bonds, notes, bills, etc. Lots of interest and principal that has to be paid. Default is unthinkable. He says he'll preserve SS, so I assume we'll still be paying FICA. But if he lets younger workers opt out into private plans, they're still gonna be paying for us old-timers, too. That'll be one tough sell. Like it or not, our entire economy and our citizen's livelihoods are intimately linked to an involved federal government. Any radical economic restructuring has to be phased in over decades--way more than one President can do in 8 years. Most of his positions are impractical pipe dreams.

I hate to break it to everyone, but Ron Paul is crazy, and if he won the presidency, America would probably come to an end.

People latch onto his few good ideas, like ending the drug war and getting us out of Iraq, while ignoring the bulk of his ideas, which are quite crazy and wouldn't work in the real world.

For the vast majority of history, people would have said that today's idea of the "real world" is the crazy one. They would be right.

One question about going back to the gold standard:
The US public debt is over $8 trillion dollars. The US holds about $160 billion in gold reserves. How would the US pay off the debt if we went to the gold standard?
In an interview Paul said that having a gold only standard has problems. What he advocates is a hard asset standard. The dollar would become of a fixed value.
Gold is a great asset for fixing a currency and I'm sure the government would aquire a lot more of it if Paul becomes president.

The Federal Reserve would be abolished along with much of the government to include the IRS. The income tax system would be abolished too. The war in Iraq would end and the troops would be sent home.

How would his actions affect the average American?
I'm a not a supporter of Paul, but those are his best qualities. He wants to eliminate debt, therefore, he would have to eliminate the things that are causing the US debt.

You are right. The guy has some crazy ideas, but you failed to mention the crazy one's. Actually, the whole Democratic line-up is about as bad as your portraying Paul. Why don't you mention any of them?

we would have a dishonest and disingenous President in office who likes to use high toned rhetoric for political gain. he would have a contingent of followers who are literally fanatically devoted to him, to the point of inventing bizarre conspiracy theories rather than accept facts about him or his candidacy (or hypothetical presidency)

if anything went wrong, it would never be his fault, but of globalist conspirators trying to do a poo on the Constitution. All of the civil rights and Constitutional freedoms that have been fought for in this country since its inception would be eroded, all in the name of some ironic form of liberty. And the country would be economically destroyed.
There probably would be a slightly lower risk of a terrorist attack from foreign powers, but would be a great deal more risk of home grown terrorists and militia groups.

Here's a few other things that would be dismantled, based on Paul's own words:
Dept. of Commerce
Dept. of Education
Dept. of Homeland Security
NASA
Medicare
Medicaid
Social Security
Dept. of Energy
Dept. of Transportation
FCC
FAA
FTC
and on and on

If Ron Paul was ever actually elected president, he would have us wearing breeches and powdered wigs, but don't worry, your musket will be protected.

If those things were eliminated how would it affect Americans? Do you really think the Federal government is the only way to go? Use your imagination. What about state's managing the business of their own citizens?

No the size of the Federal government will simply need to be reduced and all the graft, corruption, and pork-barrel spending eliminated.

Besides, have you ever heard of Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports? Look it up. See cafrman.com or cafr1.com

The government has been investing money since the 40's. They are totally in the black. Budgets are simply statements about expected expenditures. They do not reflect the total financial condition of the government.

State governments are more corrupt than Federal, and I don't want different laws for every state. What you describe would turn the US into a collection of banana republics.

I'm willing to believe that a little shake-up might be a good thing. I think there's too much inertia for many of these ideas to go anywhere, even if they are held by the president. Most of these things would need to pass through congress, which would never happen.
