That question popped in my head as I was reading some comments from another thread here and in another forum.... what would christians do, how would they live if there was no bible? I am wondering cause it seems like we (generic christian we) scour the bible looking for what we should or should not do.... are we that clueless?

thoughts?

I thought it was mostly adventists that scoured the Bible looking for what we should or should not do. Many other Christians don't look much at all (which is just as bad).

Without the Bible we would be a lot more tradition bound, as that would be the only mechanism of information propagation. But really, every major religion has religious books...

If Christianity had no Bible I think the number of Christians in the world would probably be reduced by more than half. I think it would still have a great influence though as there are numerous world religions that have no sacred writings or even a known founder that do quite well.

I think what would happen though is the concept of saved by grace could go on the wayside and we would become much more legalistic--trying to do enough good in our lives to go to heaven. That's just my opinion.

Another question you could raise is would Christianity be more unified since there would be no Holy Writings to be interpreted 50 different ways? Or would it be even more divided?

Isn't that a closed minded and elitist thing for you to say? That sounded like something a member of say ... the Church of Christ might say. :D Seriously though, aren't there sincere Bible students among different Christian groups who like the Bereans search the scriptures daily for the truth? And aren't there some Adventists who hardly pick up there Bibles?

Just a thought.

your points are valid, however my question is simple.... what would christians do if there were no bible.... I ask that because it seems some of us are sooooooo intent on making everything in the bible fit here and now, its almost like they don't want to use their brain to live a life that the bible cannot provide guidance for......

How would you know if the spirit guiding you was of God or of the Devil?

How did Paul or other apostles know they were following the Holy Spirit and not something from the devil?

The Holy Spirit is God and lives in believers. Believers know whom they are following. For instance if your Dad is talking to you - you would recognize the voice. It would be the same voice you followed when you accepted Jesus.

I agree. We need something to measure our influences against. Today that measuring stick is the Bible. Without the Bible what do we have that will help us know what is true.

Our feelings are not a good guide. Paul persecuted Christians believing in his heart he was doing God's work.

Does EGW's writings have things that are not in the Bible? I was told she just illustrated Biblical truths more clearly.
well you will have to read some of her stuff if you are so inclined but there are things she says that cannot be found in the bible.....
