About 500,000 Syrians are dead due to the Civil War. Almost all from conventional weapons. Assad struck again at the forces which the US has been helping and from the same Air Base which cruise missiles hit. Russia is sending Naval vessels into the Mediterranean and refugee babies are on Trump's do not allow lists.

What has been accomplished?

Syrian jets take off from air base US missiles struck, according to Syrian observers

Not much except sending a message. It's signaling the United States is more willing than previously to get involved. Trying to put pressure on Assad, plus Russia who supports him.

Hopefully we're smarter about this than we have been in the past. I want innocent people to be helped, but I'm worried this could be another Afghanistan and Iraq.

1. We ordinary observers of the news are not necessarily aware of all that was intended and

2. It's certainly too early to take stock of whether it succeeded or not.

There are a few things that people of bygone ages have fought to eradicate from human history.
Slavery, for example, is something that was eradicated from most civil society in the 1800's, with the last country officially allowing slavery being Saudi Arabia in 1960.
These are meaningful victories in the progress of humanity. These are milestones in a human history that at one time glorified in crucifixion too, but learned that this is not how we ought to define ourselves at a certain point too.

Chemical weapons likewise is an evil of WWI that civilized people everywhere agreed was something that people ought not fight wars with.

This is not something that either Obama or Trump differ on. As much as Obama was loathe to enter into the Syrian theatre, and as much as Trump spoke out against that too, the agreement that Obama set in place with Russia (back in the days of the red line in the sand), failed.
There was an agreement that America set into place, that was binding on all parties, and it was broken.

Now I suppose if China or some other country decided that race-based slavery was alright, there is not a lot that anybody could do other than register their displeasure. They could go 'tsk, tsk' as a means or registry, or they could stop trading, or anything up to nuking, really.
Maybe nuking would be too much though, and maybe a 'tsk tsk' would be just another way of saying that nobody gives a dam.

That is the situation that Assad has put the world in by continuing to use chemical weapons. How can the world register their belief that this guy is a monster with enough passion that people everywhere understand how horrific this kind of warfare is, even in comparison to everything else that has gone down? How can America convince the world that they are serious, if the agreements they sign onto are disregarded as mere paper from a paper tiger?

If by this action, the world gets the message that Assad is a monster from a whole new level of low, that is what this kind of message was meant to accomplish.
'Tsks, tsks' and red lines in the sand are just not enough to send that kind of message anymore.

Trump's ratings were horrible, according to fake, fake news, fake polls.

It's all show to gauge reaction and it's morally unjust.

I was unaware that Breitbart, Fox Political, Info Wars, Rush Blimpbaugh, etc... had claimed that Trump's ratings were horrible. Now, real news, such as Fox News, and most others correctly reported that his approval numbers were down.
It's all show to gauge reaction and it's morally unjust.
I can't say that I disagree.

Those polls are all fake. Just like the polls that said Hillary Clinton would win the popular vote. Fake news, fake polls.

Anyways, I forgot all about that Russia scandal thing, or whatever? Was it Syria? Obama... something? I get confused easily.

Well, the stockholders of Raytheon are richer today.

Pure coincidence that the President is a Raytheon stockholder.

Are you suggesting our insane military spending and constant engaging in conflicts is based on money? Anyways, Trump got rid of his business conflicts, just like he did his tax returns he was going to make public when the IRS was done being impressed with them, or something. I am confused - it's due to all that winning we were promised and the constant calls I get with job offers.

60 cruise missiles at about 1 million each. An attack which really does little damage for the vast dollars. Yep, Raytheon makes money but one has to wonder how good their missiles are.

As a liberal I don't know what the big deal is. Is this the first President to send missile airstrikes? No. Obama did the same thing. The difference will be when this doesn't change a thing, what will Trump do?
The signals being sent of what he will do next are mixed.
What Trump will do next is something that nobody, not even Assad will be able to predict with any kind of confidence.

The United States has no business getting involved in the Syrian Civil War. Washington has no right to be the world's nanny police. It's true that Assad used chemical weapons, but what moral difference does it make regarding the type of weapon used? They're all weapons that ultimately kill, and the US doesn't have a right to judge Syria, a nation which is in an existential crisis, or get involved in any way.

Imagine if the United States were in a second civil war today. What if a nation like China didn't like that our government was bombing the anti-government rebel forces and decided to take matters into their own hands by destroying a US air base? We would all be asking, What the hell? What business does China have in our war? If you think of things from this perspective, it's easy to see why the US has no business in Syria.
