  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In Passion of the Christ, in the garden of Giesman before Jesus knelt down and prayed to the Father, asking the Father if its possible, take away this cup.

What was He afraid of, in this very moment?

some possible answers:

- He was afraid of all the suffering of the Cross. That is not possible. We know of lots of martyrs that went to their torments (some time even more painfull of the cross) really happy and blessing God. but Jesus has more Faith than any martyr
- He was afraid of our sins...but this is not tied to this very moment. It is clear that Jesus was afraid of something that would happen in a short time.
- He was not sure to rise. This is not possible, bc He is true God. He knew perfectly that He would have win and risen.

So, what was He afraid of, in this very moment?

Being separated from His Father in Hell.

God Bless :)

Suffering and death. The ultimate human fear.

- fear to be separated from the Father in the Hell...good answer, but The Son cannot be separated for the Father even in a single moment. And the Hell anyway is something created, so it is anyway under the power of the Father.
- fear of suffering and death....not at all...if martyrs do not have such a fear, surely Jesus had not it. He is also perfect God, Almighty and with the fullness of Hope and Faith.

There should be something else

why?
Jesus was going to endure the hellish punishments of every person who ever lived and He knew what that meant. He was strong but the idea of enduring that kind of punishment must have been such an enormous burden and pain to bear that it made even God to think twice about going through with it.

Martyrs endure their death with joy because the pain is temporary and bliss is near. They know that, because of Jesus, they never have to endure an eternity of torment and abandonment by God.

And Jesus WAS abandoned by God so we would never have to be.

- endure the hellish punishments of every person: but Christ is true God, it is not the quantity of something that can afraid Him: He is almighty.
- If Martyrs known that they never have to endore an eternity, tha same is for Christ, who is true God and knows everithing. Christ knew perfectly of His risen (and He told the apostles many times, like Luke 11,29): but Christ is true God by Himself.
- Jesus was never separated by the Father. Can the Trinity be separed even for a while? not at all. (If you think to Mt 27,47, the greek egkataleipô do Not means 'to be separated', but 'to be no more helped')

So you answers look wrong, if you keep a classic orthodx christology.
There should be something else
And in the garden of Giezman, Jesus was really afraid indeed, even if He is True God

Maybe its the fact that all the sins of this entire world was put on Him all at once. Jesus is Holy and to have all that sin poured on Him is like extreme poisoning. So I think maybe His fear was not the suffering of the flesh but perhaps something more deep like suffering in the spiritual realm..something we probably couldnt understand right now.

Luke records that Jesus' sweat in Luke 22:44 was like drops of blood falling to the ground. I've heard that appearently this can happen when someone is under massive amounts of stress such that the sweat glands actually burst and bleed (or something like that). I'm not too sure about the accuracy of that, but anyways. We know for sure that Jesus was stressed about what lay ahead for Him.

I think that the thought of the suffering that lay ahead for Him contributed to this stress ... the very thought of taking the full wrath of the Father against sin and sinners upon Himself would have further stressed Him as He was holy ("The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak").

I dare say that probably the most difficult thing was Him knowing that He would be out of fellowship with the Father as the sins of the world were laid upon Him - something that had never happened before.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think that we'll ever know or comprehend just what Jesus went through to save us. The more that I meditate on it the greater the sense of awe and humility I get.

Did not Jesus cry out my God why have you forsaken me? It was at that moment when the sins of the world were placed upon Jesus and he was sacrificed for our sins. This was what Jesus was afraid of to be the atoning sacrifice and being separated from the Father because of our sins. Keeping a clearly orthodox belief God cannot have sin within his pressence so he turned his face away from Jesus and Jesus had to pay the price for our sin. I am not sure what cost was paid by Jesus whether or not he was sent to hell but I do know that Jesus took our punishment and judgement for us and that must have caused him much anguish. As the bible tells us Jesus is not immune from human emotions even though he knows what is going to happen. He cried when lazerus died even though he knew he was going o die why? Because Jesus on all levels can feel the same things we can feel.

I think this statement rings closest to being true. While being God himself, he was capable of taking on the full Wrath of the Father. However, I don't think he'd be looking forward to it.

Jesus The Son had never once been separated from God The Father, or God The Holy Spirit. This prompted His anguish on the Cross when He cried out: "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
