The idea of improving man through genetic manipulation is not dead at all. The whole point is in the word "improve", which simply means "make better", which implies a commonly-agreed upon standard of what is good. Only we don't agree. When their good is my bad, we no longer mean the same thing by the word "improve". The Nazis, by their lights, wanted to improve the human race. So do a great many people today. To the unbeliever, man is the measure of all things, he must be his own god, and decide what is best for himself. As long as there are enough such people, eugenics, under whatever name - or with no name - will always be a real possibility. There was a time when the whole world looked to Germany for an advancement of humans and eugenics. The United States was a popular place for eugenics, many were euthanized and sterilized. I think the major reason it was stopped was because everyone saw its true face after Nazi Germany was defeated and they saw the consequences of eugenics.
Let's all hope and pray that eugenics is dead. I've heard of some who want to bring it back, I hope heheh never accomplish their goals.
Eugenics is not only direct manipulation of genes themselves by scientists. All the things we tolerate today regarding "birth control", abortion, and so on go hand-in-hand with the eugenic philosophy. Man is to be his own god, and create what seems good to him.
