There comes a point in all this reverse engineering that you have to conclude that there was NOTHING (a.k.a. "nihilo").

But "nothing" isn't a scientific term, nor is it a biblical one. So, now what? Do we just go round and round trying to deduce and interpret what we think the Hebrew terms, "bara" and "asah," mean and parse to on the most miniscule of textual (let alone "scientific") evidence?

No, I think we as Christians would get a bigger bang for our buck by focusing on the end of the Bible rather than on the beginning of it. The philosophy of Transhumanism is a more pernicious idea than the scientific theory of evolution will ever possibly be.

Well, doesn't Genesis 1 indicate that the Spirit of God was "hovering" over the deeps of the Earth? It doesn't say that the Lord 'moved from the outside of His created cosmos to the inside' and then He was hovering ...

My more interior and less obvious point is this: I don't think Genesis 1 is there to answer all of our questions about theological cosmology. Rather, I think it's there to indicate that it was the One Lord who created the cosmos and earth instead of a pantheon of gods who did so after serendipitously "falling out" of the butt of universe ...

... so what evidence do I think I should find if God created Ex Nihilo? ... I'd find a paucity of evident, visible gods. And, indeed, when I look around in Yuri Gagarin style, I can honestly say, "I see no other gods..." Then, I laugh with the aplomb of Yuri Gagarin, but I do so without all of the silly Soviet paraphernalia and ridiculous ideology that goes with it.
