when people ask me what my religion is i really don't know what to tell them, see i was born to a jewish mom but i believe in christ.
i'm not sure if i should be called Missianic cause thats what most jews who start believeing in christ are, the thing is i follow the baptist religion, and not sure if that would make me baptist or not...

i read some where that a non-believer who starts believing in christ becomes a christian, cause what it takes to be a christian is truly believing in christ. i'v talked once to this woman who's baptist and she also said it's confussing what i should call myself....

o.k so people please help....what am i?....christian....? missianic....? or baptist....?

Hi

If I was in your position, I wouldn't really think about what I am called. I wouldn't worry. :) I'd stick to figuring out what I really want and learning and praying and growing spiritually and emotionally. If, after 3 months, or 3 years, you finally wake up and go "Wow. I'm a Christian" or "Hey, I'm Missianic" ... that's great. :)

You don't need to label yourself a religion just for the sake of being able to say that you are that religion. If you are unsure, tell someone exactly how you feel. Tell them that you're not sure what religion you are. Say, "I grew up in a Jewish household, but I believe in Christ, so I am searching right now for where I belong and what religion I am".

That's what I say. "I am a Christian but I still have some things I need to sort out before I can commit myself completely to the religion" Some people might not be able to handle that, but really, it's not about them, it's about you and your own spiritual journey, and wherever that takes you.

Well firstly you are a Christian. No matter whether your baptist, messianic, catholic, lutheran, pentacostal....etc...etc you're still a Christian.

I think you're wondering what denomination you are. In which case if you attend a baptist church, follow baptist teachings etc then you're a baptist.

Either way, it's just a label.

I agree. When you believe in Christ you are a Christian first and foremost. The other denominational tags are not as important right now (in fact I don't believe they are important at all and I find some Christians put too much weight on them- but that's another issue :) ) so don't worry too much about that. Like the first person said, concentrate on getting to know Christ better and growing with Him and in time you may find what you want to call yourself.

Hmmm so I really haven't added anything new then, just glued together what the first and second person said. Doh!

I am a Christian. I am a follower of The Messiah Jesus. I do not need to worry about any denominational name. If you Believe Jesus and accept him as Messiah Redeemer Savior Lord then you are part of my eternal family.

So don't worry about finding a tag to chain around your neck. You are a much loved adopted child of The God of Abraham.

It's an honor to be able to help you. It is a good thing to get to know Jesus with a one on one relationship with Him. Spend your time well. :)

Why not just leave the religion part out of it and just tell them that you are a daughter of God. I am sure that this will invoke a very meaningful discussion.

Hi OrangeHope!

Everything said thus far is your answer. No need to stamp your forehead with some label. Labels, if your not careful, can cause you to start filtering stuff you read in the Bible through that label's seive. Study the Bible without the constraints of any 'programming' labels or 'schools of thought' asking the Lord to reveal doctrinal truth to you. Also, here's a good primer to read: The Labels That Blind Us .

Hope that helped..

I too find it tricky to say what I am - having been brought up in a Christian family but not seeing God in the traditional theistic way any longer. I still identify with God best through the Judeo-Christian tradition so continue to call myself a Christian.

In the end though, I'm sure it doesn't matter what label is attributed to us (by ourselves or others). I like Yancey's quote:

"God doesn't want more Christians. God wants more Christ-like Christians, more Christ-like Buddhists, more Christ-like Jews and more Christ-like Muslims"

Whatever you call yourself, actions speak louder than words. And any label will carry bad and inaccurate connotations with it along with the accurate.

Blessings

Okay, my understanding of 'Messianic Jews' is that they aren't Jews. My sister once visited one of their temples and there where few people there who could really call themselves Jews. Messianic Jews are a denomination of the Christian faith, not Jewish people who believe in Christ. In your case, as in mine, you are Jewish in heritage alone. When people ask what religion you are, if you believe in Christ, you are not Jewish.

You are a Christian, more specifically a Baptist.

Sidenote- if you were raised in as a Jew you might to check out a Messianic temple. You might find that you are very comfortable there and that it has a familiar feel... If you are ever looking for a new church, that is. :)

You're a Christian. Messianic and Baptists are just denominations of Christianity. Messianics believe in continuing the Jewish stuff, like kosher and the old Jewish holidays. You go to a Baptist church, so you know what they believe and practice, at least you should. What you call yourself should reflect your beliefs and practices, rather than your heritage. But above all, you are a believer, so that makes you a Christian.

The main thing is to make sure you ARE a Christian in fact. Do you believe Jesus died on the cross & rose from the dead 3 days later? Do you believe the bible to be the only true source & word of God? Do you believe Jesus died on the cross for you & are you trusting SOLELY in that? If so, you're a Christian. I would call myself whatever church I go to regularly. You may have grown up Jewish attending a synagogue, but if you're a frequent Baptist church visitor, call yourself a Baptist. The main thing is,.....you're a Christian. That's the most important part.

Are you sure there are no churches??? Sometimes groups of christians will meet in different places such as school gyms or meeting halls. Some do not have an official church with a sign. Do a google search for your town and surrounding towns. Did you check the phone book? Do you live in a small town? Is a ride an issue?

Well, I can only add to you confusion by mentioning that the Bible calls followers of Christ "SAINTS" That should shake it up a bit.

Personally...If asked, I call myself a Christian. That's all. I have attended many denominational fellowships, and the "church" Christ is building is in the midst of them...If you really belong to Him, you ARE THE CHURCH. So I guess you could call youself that too. lol.

You love the Lord and you adhere to His Word...YOU'RE A CHIRSTIAN! WELCOME SISTER!

Oh, and about churches in your area...there are usually ppl who love the Lord around us....ask the Lord to open this up to you. If you are searching specifically for a Baptist congregation....God hears that prayer too. Stay in touch with HIM first of all. ;)

Blessings
